0:00And anything fleeing from the crates
0:02will swim straight into the mouths of
0:03the waiting tree valley.
0:06There's nowhere to hide.
0:14And there are snakes here, too. Lots of
0:18them.
0:24These are banded sea crates. They lay
0:28their eggs on land, but they hunt here
0:31in the water.
0:37They're too slow to catch fish in a
0:40straight chase, so they seek prey that
0:42is hiding in the nooks and crannies of
0:44the coral.
0:48Their bite is highly venomous and
0:50paralyzes their victims.
0:57And on this reef, the snakes do not hunt
1:00alone.
1:07Sholes of yellow goatfish and trival are
1:11seeking similar prey, and they attract
1:14the snake's attention. As one group of
1:16hunters searches the reef, they're
1:18joined by the other.
1:28At least 30 snakes have now joined the
1:32caravan.
1:38The big fish scare the prey into cracks
1:42and there the snakes can catch them and
1:45anything fleeing from the crates will
1:47swim straight into the mouths of the
1:49waiting tree valley.
1:52There's nowhere to hide.
1:59As the raiders scour the reef, more and
2:03more snakes join the hunt.
2:26This cooperation between snakes and
2:29fish, spectacular though it is, has only
2:32recently been observed, for it only
2:34happens on the most remote reefs in
2:36Indonesia.
2:47Perhaps such hunting alliances were once
2:49a common sight, but today no more than
2:526% of Indonesia's reefs are in their
2:55pristine state.
