Anthropic CEO Claims AI Growth is Exponential, But Research Says Otherwise

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, wrote an essay comparing AI to the Hobbits in the Lord of the Rings. This comparison may not be the only fictional part of the essay.

Amodei writes that AI and politics are like the Hobbits and Treebeard, but then he makes a controversial claim. He says that AI is growing exponentially, like the Hobbits moving faster and faster.

Amodei claims that AI's growth is exponential, with over a decade of evidence. He says that if this growth continues, we will get what he calls Powerful AI.

Amodei uses the word 'exponential' many times in his essay. He is about to make a lot of money from Anthropic's IPO, but is his claim true?

Let's look at the evidence. Amodei links to a 2020 paper to prove his claim, but other AI experts disagree. Anthropic's own research also contradicts Amodei's essay.

On the system card for Claude Mythos, Anthropic's model, it says that the gains are due to human research, not AI assistance. This is the opposite of what Amodei claims.

The system card for Fable 5, another Anthropic model, also says that there is no evidence of exponential growth. The researchers used a test called the Epoch Capabilities Index to check for this.

The Fable system card says that there is no sustained acceleration in AI progress due to AI itself.

So, where did Amodei get his information from? We asked Anthropic for clarification, but the paper he cites has been questioned by another AI researcher, Gary Marcus.

Marcus wrote that there are holes in the scaling argument and that we may be reaching the limits of deep learning. He cited research on OpenAI's GPT-3 model, which shows that scaling has limitations.

Marcus was criticized at the time, but his views have been proven correct, especially after the release of GPT-5.

Finding evidence for exponential AI growth may be harder than expected.
