Japan Sees Fewer Tourists After Record Year

Japan had 3.55 million visitors last month. This is 3.6% less than the same time last year. The Japan National Tourism Organization reported this.

Visitors from 19 countries and territories were at a record high in May.

More people came from South Korea, the US, and the Middle East. South Korea had 15.2% more visitors. The US had 7% more. The Middle East had 67.8% more after some flights started again.

Fewer people came from China. This is the sixth month in a row that numbers have gone down. China told its people not to travel to Japan last autumn.

Fewer people also came from Thailand and Vietnam. Thailand had 8.6% fewer visitors. Vietnam had 2.1% fewer.

Japan had a record 42.7 million tourists in 2025. This was a big year for tourism.

The government wants 60 million tourists to visit Japan each year by 2030.
