0:01Like something out of science fiction,
0:04the fruing body of the cordiceps erupts
0:07from the ant's head.
0:11Incredibly, 80% of all insects live in
0:15jungles.
0:16Few are more successful than the ants.
0:19There can be 8 million individuals in a
0:22single hectare.
0:24But jungle ants don't have it all their
0:27own way.
0:35These bullet ants are showing some
0:38worrying symptoms.
0:41Spores from a parasitic fungus called
0:43cortisps have infiltrated their bodies
0:46and their minds.
0:54Its infected brain directs this ant
0:58upwards.
1:01Then, utterly disorientated, it grips a
1:04stem with its mandibles.
1:06Those afflicted that are discovered by
1:08the workers are quickly taken away and
1:11dumped far away from the colony.
1:15It seems extreme, but this is the reason
1:18why.
1:21Like something out of science fiction,
1:24the fruing body of the cordiceps erupts
1:27from the ant's head.
1:43It can take 3 weeks to grow. And when
1:47finished, the deadly spores will burst
1:49from its tip. Then any ant in the
1:52vicinity will be in serious risk of
1:55death.
1:58The fungus is so virulent it can wipe
2:01out whole colonies of ants. And it's not
2:04just ants that fall victim to this
2:06killer.
2:09There are literally thousands of
2:11different types of cordiseps fungi and
2:14remarkably each specializes on just one
2:18species.
