HMRC sending Winter Fuel Payment letters to 1.3 million pensioners

The Winter Fuel Payment helps people pay energy bills.

Over 1 million pensioners will get a letter from HMRC this month about their Winter Fuel Payment.

The Winter Fuel Payment is worth up to £300, depending on age and living arrangements.

If you earn over £35,000, you must pay back the Winter Fuel Payment. Most people don't need to do anything.

If your tax code changes, HMRC will contact you. If you do self-assessment tax returns, it will be in your 2025/26 tax return.

1.3 million pensioners will be contacted by HMRC if their tax code is changing.

MoneySavingExpert.com says scammers may try to con people, so be careful with HMRC messages.

Genuine HMRC letters won't require action, and texts and emails won't have links.

HMRC won't ask for details or payments. Report suspicious messages to 60599 or phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.

Most people who need to pay back the Winter Fuel Payment will do so automatically via their tax code.

For those registered for Self Assessment, it will be collected via their tax return.

HMRC has provided online guidance and a calculator to see if you need to pay back the payment.

Winter Fuel Payments are for people born before September 22, 1959.

You should have received your payment if you claimed certain benefits between September 15 to 21, 2025.

You weren't eligible if you were in hospital or prison during the qualifying week.

You also weren't eligible if you lived in a care home and claimed certain benefits from June 23, 2025 or earlier.
