New Threat in Alberta's Drug Scene: A Potent Tranquilizer Resistant to Overdose Treatments

According to a researcher and doctor based in Alberta, a strong non-opioid sedative called medetomidine is increasingly being detected in the province's illicit drugs, which is a worrying trend.

A low heart rate of less than 50 beats per minute can be an indicator that someone who has overdosed has medetomidine in their system, according to Dr. Ghosh.

In a statement, Alberta's Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction acknowledged that medetomidine is present in the illicit drug supply but noted that there have been no deaths directly attributed to this substance in Alberta.

The ministry also reported a 39% decrease in opioid-related deaths in Alberta since the peak in 2023, with most communities returning to pre-pandemic levels, except for Edmonton.

Dr. Ghosh explains that medetomidine is often added to drugs to prolong their sedative effects, which is a tactic used by those manufacturing these substances to keep users under the influence for longer.

The constant evolution of the drug supply means that the mix of substances can change rapidly, making it challenging to keep up with the latest developments.

Dr. Ghosh notes that the emergence of new dealers in a city can quickly alter the drug supply, making it essential to stay vigilant and adapt responses accordingly.

The nature of overdoses and the methods needed to treat them are constantly changing, making it crucial to have a wide range of tools and strategies available.

Dr. Ghosh advocates for having all possible tools at hand, including Narcan and supervised consumption sites, to effectively deal with the evolving drug situation.

The Edmonton Police Service has also detected medetomidine in the city, but they haven't seen a significant spike in overdose deaths related to this tranquilizer.

The situation highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among health professionals, law enforcement, and community organizations to address the complex issues surrounding drug use and overdose prevention.
