Important Changes to Premium Bonds

Premium Bonds customers have been warned about a change in the savings rules.

Premium Bonds holders are being told to think about an important savings idea. This warning comes as NS&I makes changes to the savings scheme.

From April, the chance of winning a prize has gotten worse. The prize fund rate has also dropped from 3.6% to 3.3%.

The monthly draw offers big prizes, but most wins are small. Savers should remember that they might not win anything for months or years.

Tim Grimsditch warned that more prize rate cuts might be coming. He said that if interest rates go down, Premium Bonds prize rates might also go down.

NS&I usually changes rates when the market changes. If base rates fall, savings products like Premium Bonds might also change.

Some people might think about putting their money in ISAs instead. Mr Grimsditch said that using your full ISA allowance is a good idea, especially if you have a lot of cash.

Moving money from Premium Bonds to a cash ISA can give you tax-free interest. The annual ISA limit is £20,000.

ISAs are tax-free, so you don't have to pay tax on the interest. It's a good idea to use this year's allowance before the rules change next year.

From April 2027, only £12,000 can be put into an ISA. The rest can only be used for stocks and shares.

People 65 and older won't be affected by these changes. Mr Grimsditch said that if you don't use your ISA allowance, you'll lose it forever.
