0:00Well, hello and welcome
0:01to this overcast day.
0:03Let me tilt you back for
0:05a minute and you'll be
0:05able to see what I mean.
0:08Today the sky
0:11is just gray.
0:14There's actually
0:15a little bit of fog
0:16in the distance.
0:18And we would say that
0:19today it is overcast.
0:22It's February,
0:23and the day is overcast.
0:25This is my least favorite
0:27kind of weather.
0:28It's about one degree
0:29right now, and things
0:31are starting to melt.
0:32There's no sunshine.
0:34It's not a happy day.
0:36You know how a sunny
0:37day can make you
0:38really, really happy?
0:39Well, an overcast day
0:41can make you
0:42a little bit sad.
0:43So that's your
0:44first word.
0:44That's your first new
0:45English vocabulary word
0:47for this lesson.
0:48An overcast day.
0:49A day with clouds in
0:50the sky and no sunshine.
0:52And I think I'll
0:53teach you about four,
0:54four more words
0:54in this lesson.
0:55A nice, short
0:56English lesson
0:57on an overcast day.
0:59Hopefully this lesson
1:00makes you happy, because
1:01the weather isn't
1:02making me super happy.
1:04Another word we would use
1:06to describe a day
1:07like this is dreary.
1:09When you say the day is
1:10dreary, it's a hard word
1:11to say, isn't it?
1:12Let me say it
1:13one more time.
1:14It's a dreary day.
1:15It means it's kind
1:16of dull and a little
1:18bit depressing.
1:19So let's again describe
1:21the opposite.
1:22If I go to the beach
1:23in July, the day
1:25is very vibrant.
1:26There's lots of sunshine
1:27and waves and fresh
1:29air, and I feel alive.
1:31But today is a little
1:32bit dreary.
1:33It's a day where you feel
1:35like just staying in
1:36the house and drinking
1:37a cup of coffee or a cup
1:38of hot chocolate.
1:40Because outside
1:41it's just kind of dull
1:42and a little
1:43bit depressing,
1:44a little bit sad.
1:46So a dreary day,
1:47a day like this,
1:48where it's overcast,
1:49using that word again.
1:50And it's just
1:51a little bit dull.
1:52Like if I look around,
1:54if I show you.
1:56Even the colors of
1:58the barn seem
2:00a little bit subdued.
2:02It's not an exciting,
2:05vibrant day.
2:06It's just dreary.
2:09Sometimes we'll describe
2:10a day like this by just
2:11saying, it's a blah day.
2:13Blah, blah.
2:15It's a blah day.
2:17Again, this simply means
2:18it's just not exciting.
2:20By the way, this is
2:21an exciting day for me,
2:23though, because I'm
2:24recording this on a day
2:25that is a holiday.
2:26And I'm actually
2:27having supper with all
2:28my kids tonight.
2:29They're all home
2:30from university.
2:31So even though
2:32the weather outside is
2:33kind of blah, my life is
2:35kind of exciting today.
2:36So blah.
2:38A day like this, it's
2:39kind of a blah day.
2:41This kind of day
2:41doesn't give me energy
2:43to do things.
2:45Although as soon as I
2:46thought this morning
2:47that it was a blah
2:48day, I quickly thought
2:49of five more words I
2:51could teach you.
2:51And then I was excited
2:52to come outside on this
2:54blah day to teach
2:55you an English lesson.
2:56So a blah day, a day
2:58that lacks excitement,
2:59a day that just isn't
3:00something that you
3:01look forward to.
3:03We would also probably
3:04call this a drab day.
3:06When you say something
3:07is drab, it means
3:08it lacks color and it
3:10lacks excitement.
3:11If I show you this area
3:13today, it
3:14certainly lacks color.
3:16If I was to show you
3:17this area in the summer,
3:19it would be
3:19vibrant and green.
3:21If you look behind me, it
3:22also is very, very drab.
3:24In fact, if you look
3:26at the grass,
3:27the grass is all brown.
3:29The trees have no leaves.
3:32Even the evergreen
3:33trees don't seem
3:36excitingly green today.
3:38They seem just
3:39a little bit drab.
3:41So here we are outside
3:42on a drab day, a day
3:44that certainly lacks
3:45color and lacks a bit
3:47of excitement.
3:48Even in the distance,
3:49if you look, you can see
3:52there's a yellow
3:53grain elevator there.
3:55And it doesn't even look
3:56very colorful today.
3:58I think we need the sun
3:59to come out
3:59and everything would
4:00look a lot less drab.
4:03So in English, a very
4:04common way to describe
4:05a day like this, a day
4:07where it's overcast
4:08and where it's just
4:09dreary and drab, is to
4:10just say it's
4:11miserable.
4:12It's a miserable day.
4:13It's actually starting
4:15to rain a little bit.
4:16A really fine mist.
4:18And I would just say, if
4:19I had to work outside
4:20today, I would say it's
4:22a miserable day to
4:24work outside.
4:24The weather is miserable.
4:26It's a miserable day.
4:28That's a hard word
4:29to say too, isn't it?
4:30Miserable.
4:31It's a miserable day.
4:33And it would not be
4:34a nice day to have
4:36to work outside.
4:37I'm always a little bit...
4:40I feel bad when I drive
4:41on a day like this
4:42and I see people who
4:44have to work outside.
4:44I have a lot of respect
4:46for people who are able
4:47to work outside in
4:49miserable weather,
4:50fixing things, building
4:51things, and doing all
4:52the things that make
4:53our lives a lot more
4:55comfortable.
4:55So it's a miserable day.
4:57But thank you to all
4:58of you who have jobs
4:59where you work outside
5:01in miserable weather
5:02on a miserable day
5:03to make life happen.
5:06We might also describe
5:07today as a gloomy day.
5:09When you say a day
5:10is gloomy, it means
5:11it's not very well
5:12lit, but it also
5:14is kind of talking
5:15about how you feel.
5:16It usually means
5:17you feel a little
5:18bit sad or unhappy.
5:20So if I say today is
5:22a gloomy day, it means
5:23there's no sunshine.
5:24But it also means I
5:26myself, because
5:27of the weather, because
5:28it's a gloomy day, don't
5:29feel super excited or
5:31happy about the day.
5:32So when you say a day is
5:34gloomy, it means it's
5:35overcast, it's not well
5:36lit, and you're feeling
5:38a little bit sad.
5:39And again, the best
5:40thing to do then,
5:41especially in the
5:42winter in Canada, is
5:43to go inside, have a
5:45cup of tea or hot
5:46chocolate or coffee,
5:47have something hot to
5:48drink, and, maybe sit
5:49and talk with someone
5:50on the phone or in
5:51person.
5:52And I'm sure your
5:53day will get better.
5:55We might also use
5:56the word glum
5:57to describe how we feel
5:58on a day like this or to
6:00describe the day itself.
6:02If I was to say to
6:04Jen, I'm just
6:04feeling glum today.
6:06It's overcast outside,
6:07it's a dreary, drab
6:08day, and I don't feel
6:09like doing anything.
6:11When I use the word glum,
6:12it simply means I'm
6:13unhappy, usually because
6:16of how I'm feeling,
6:17but possibly because
6:18of the weather.
6:19So today is kind
6:20of a glum day.
6:21It's kind of
6:22a dreary day.
6:22It's very drab out here.
6:24The weather's a little
6:25bit miserable.
6:26A lot of negative
6:27ways to describe
6:28a day like this.
6:30Well, thank you so much
6:31for watching this little
6:32English lesson where I
6:33was actually a little
6:35bit happy while talking
6:36about a day where I
6:37thought I was going to
6:38be unhappy because of
6:40the weather.
6:40But then I had this
6:41idea for an English
6:42lesson and I got a lot
6:44more excited
6:45and a lot more happy.
6:46Thanks for watching.
