When to Stop Walking Your Dog in a Heatwave

The sun is out, and dog owners want to walk their dogs. But experts say it can get too hot for dogs.
The UK had a 38C heatwave, and schools closed. People looked for ways to stay cool.
Animal Friends Pet Insurance says dogs can get heatstroke at 20C if they exercise.
Heatstroke can kill dogs.
Temperatures between 7C and 15C are safe for dogs. But at 16C to 19C, some dogs need extra care.
At 20C to 23C, all dogs can get heatstroke when they run or exercise.
At 24C, it gets very dangerous for dogs. Puppies and big dogs are at greater risk.
Jen Wormleighton is the Head of Veterinary Services at Animal Friends Pet Insurance.
Jen Wormleighton said owners must change their walking routine in warm weather.
Jen said heat-related illness can happen early, so owners must be proactive. They can walk dogs early, use shaded routes, and give them water.
Animal Friends says walk dogs before 8am, use shaded routes, and give them water to reduce the risk.
The RSPCA says dogs cannot cool themselves like humans. They rely on panting, and heatstroke can be fatal.
Some dogs are more likely to get heatstroke, like flat-faced breeds and old dogs. Many cases happen during walks.
The British Veterinary Association says signs of heatstroke include panting, breathing problems, and vomiting. Owners must act fast and contact a vet.
