What the Moon Looks Like Today

On Sunday, June 7, the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase. Tonight, 62% of the Moon is lit, says NASA.

You can see the Oceanus Procellarum, Kepler Crater, and Tycho Crater without help. With binoculars, you see the Gassendi Crater, Mare Humorum, and Alphonsus Crater. With a telescope, you see the Apollo 12 spot, Schiller Crater, and Rima Ariadaeus.

The next Full Moon is on June 29.

The Moon goes around the Earth in 29.5 days. It has eight phases. The same side of the Moon always faces us, but the sunlight we see changes. This makes the lunar shapes, from crescents to Full Moon. All these stages make the lunar cycle.

New Moon: The Moon is between the Earth and sun, so we don't see it.

Waxing Crescent: A small light appears on the right side.

First Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit on the right. It looks like a half-Moon. It's half lit.

Waxing Gibbous: More than half is lit, but not full yet.

Full Moon: The whole Moon is lit and visible.

Waning Gibbous: The Moon loses light on the right side.

Third Quarter: The left side is lit, like another half-Moon.

Waning Crescent: A small light is on the left before it goes dark.
