A UK Island Left Empty by Disease

A settlement in Scotland was left empty. The island of Hirta was home to people for 2,000 years, but they left in the 1930s due to health concerns.

People kept animals inside to stay warm in winter.

At its peak, 112 people lived on Hirta, but the number went down.

The island had very limited medical care, and visitors brought new illnesses.

In the 1930s, after a woman died from illnesses that could have been treated on the mainland, the people decided to leave.

The people were taken to mainland Scotland by boat in August.

Before leaving, they left food and a bible in each home.

The last person who lived on the island died in 2016.
