In Mexico's Sea of Cortez,
0:06
a place once called the world's aquarium,
0:09
life is under pressure.
0:10
Warming waters, vanishing species
0:13
and the sheer scale of illegal fishing
0:15
have pushed this ecosystem to the brink.
0:18
In this episode, we meet José,
0:20
once an illegal fisherman,
0:22
now one of the region's most committed guardians of nature.
0:26
From La Paz, he leads a quiet revolution at sea,
0:29
building trust, turning the tide
0:31
and showing how those who were once part of the problem
0:34
can become the ocean's greatest protectors.
0:55
[Narrator] The Sea of Cortez is one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth.
1:03
However, over the last few decades,
1:06
overfishing and poaching has devastated marine life
1:10
and severely damaged the seabed.
1:13
But one man has made it his mission to keep these waters safe.
1:30
The Citizen Observers Network, known locally as ROC,
1:34
is a nonprofit made up of local residents who work with authorities
1:38
to protect the marine environment in La Paz,
1:41
a region long plagued by hookah fishing,
1:44
a method of speargun fishing that is banned in these waters.
2:14
And José knows the risk of fishing illegally in these waters better than anyone.
2:38
As José was one of the most skilled illegal fishermen operating here,
2:42
ROC asked him to change sides and join them in protecting the sea.
3:12
The Sea of Cortez is home to 900 species of fish,
3:16
over 70 of which only exist in this region.
4:07
José and his team are civilian rangers,
4:10
but as guardians, they work closely with local authorities
4:13
to monitor the bay for illegal boats,
4:16
most of which appear under cover of night.
5:07
Because of his past life,
5:09
José knows these waters well.
5:12
But navigating dangerous seas in the pitch black
5:15
means taking risks with unpredictable weather conditions,
5:19
possible collisions with other vessels
5:21
and encountering armed illegal fishermen.
5:30
As well as these crucial patrols,
5:32
no conservation project like this would be sustainable
5:36
without working with the local community.
6:07
Local fishers are encouraged to report any illegal activity,
6:10
such as certain types of speargun fishing, which are prohibited here.
6:15
But despite the damage to their businesses,
6:18
they're often reluctant to come forward.
