Dr. Hodges and his technician, Paul, are out of the office
0:05
and on the way to a horse sanctuary
0:07
to see Cowboy, a horse with a painful hind leg.
0:10
Hey, how are you?
0:11
Good, how are you?
0:12
DR. HODGES: I am doing very well.
0:13
This is Cowboy.
0:14
He's going to be your patient for the day.
0:16
DR. HODGES: All right.
0:17
And what's going on with Cowboy today?
0:18
Cowboy has stifle lock pretty bad in his back legs.
0:22
We got a horse a few years ago on a call--
0:25
Cowboy.
0:26
He came from Florida.
0:27
He's had stifle lock.
0:29
He's had it since the day he walked off the trailer.
0:31
And it's just progressively gotten worse.
0:33
So we called Dr. Hodges here to see what he could do.
0:35
NARRATOR: Equivalent to the human knee, the stifle
0:38
is located in the upper hind leg and is the largest
0:41
joint in a horse's body.
0:43
DR. HODGES: Does he sleep standing up?
0:44
He does.
0:45
Yeah, so that's-- that can be one problem.
0:47
Stifle lock-- and what that is, the patella tendon was getting
0:50
stuck in an upward position, so he kind of
0:52
pulls his leg a little bit.
0:53
So he kind of walks like this instead of being able to flex.
0:56
What you have to do sometimes is you go in
0:58
and you snip the actual patella tendon.
1:00
And you loosen it up.
1:00
But it tends to lead to arthritis.
1:02
So what we're going to try is a newer technology.
1:04
We're going to use some laser therapy
1:05
on that tendon to go in there and release some inflammation.
1:08
And this laser therapy, it works real well.
1:10
All the major league baseball players, football players,
1:13
have been using it for the last few years
1:15
and seen some tremendous results.
1:16
Perfect.
1:18
Hopefully that works and makes Cowboy run around and have
1:20
a good time and enjoy life.
1:22
[music playing]
1:23
I'm a firm believer in let's try the least
1:26
invasive method first.
1:27
Laser therapy is one of the newer therapies
1:29
that is used in veterinary medicine.
1:31
As a matter of fact, 20 years ago
1:33
when I graduated vet school, it wasn't even an option.
1:35
I wasn't even taught the technology
1:37
because it didn't exist.
1:38
NARRATOR: Laser therapy uses pure light
1:40
of a single wavelength to reduce inflammation
1:43
and stimulate tissue repair.
1:45
All right.
1:47
Great patient.
1:48
Does he get much time in the pasture?
1:50
TIFFANY NEWMAN: He does.
1:51
We try and leave him in the pasture 24/7.
1:54
Ooh.
1:55
So-- hey, I'm sorry, bud.
1:57
He may be feeling a little bit of a warm sensation,
1:59
but absolutely no pain at all.
2:03
I just want to kind of loosen that tendon up a little bit.
2:05
What's my count down there, Paulie?
2:07
Five seconds.
2:08
DR. HODGES: Five seconds.
2:09
The laser machine, we use it on everything.
2:12
We use it on dogs, cats, mice, turtles--
2:14
Turtles.
2:15
--anything.
2:16
[laughs]
2:17
And one.
2:18
Awesome job, Cowboy.
2:19
Awesome job.
2:20
So you got the same treatment that all
2:23
the NFL and NBA athletes got.
2:25
TIFFANY NEWMAN: There you go. You're the next Tom Brady.
2:26
DR. HODGES: There you go.
2:27
You're the new Tom Brady.
2:28
[laughing]
2:30
All right, Cowboy.
2:32
Let's walk around a little bit, see how you feel.
2:34
[smacks lips]
2:35
[music playing]
2:37
It seemed like he's starting to show some response
2:39
to the treatment already.
2:40
I think with some more treatments,
2:42
he should do pretty well.
2:44
Dr. Hodges said it would take a few days to really
2:47
have the inflammation go down.
2:48
So to see results right away was just like, wow, all right,
2:51
now I'm excited to see what he looks like, you know, two
2:54
to three days from now.
2:55
Good boy.
2:57
Good boy.
