0:05and on the way to a horse sanctuary

0:07to see Cowboy, a horse with a painful hind leg.

0:10Hey, how are you?

0:11Good, how are you?

0:12DR. HODGES: I am doing very well.

0:13This is Cowboy.

0:14He's going to be your patient for the day.

0:16DR. HODGES: All right.

0:17And what's going on with Cowboy today?

0:18Cowboy has stifle lock pretty bad in his back legs.

0:22We got a horse a few years ago on a call--

0:25Cowboy.

0:26He came from Florida.

0:27He's had stifle lock.

0:29He's had it since the day he walked off the trailer.

0:31And it's just progressively gotten worse.

0:33So we called Dr. Hodges here to see what he could do.

0:35NARRATOR: Equivalent to the human knee, the stifle

0:38is located in the upper hind leg and is the largest

0:41joint in a horse's body.

0:43DR. HODGES: Does he sleep standing up?

0:44He does.

0:45Yeah, so that's-- that can be one problem.

0:47Stifle lock-- and what that is, the patella tendon was getting

0:50stuck in an upward position, so he kind of

0:52pulls his leg a little bit.

0:53So he kind of walks like this instead of being able to flex.

0:56What you have to do sometimes is you go in

0:58and you snip the actual patella tendon.

1:00And you loosen it up.

1:00But it tends to lead to arthritis.

1:02So what we're going to try is a newer technology.

1:04We're going to use some laser therapy

1:05on that tendon to go in there and release some inflammation.

1:08And this laser therapy, it works real well.

1:10All the major league baseball players, football players,

1:13have been using it for the last few years

1:15and seen some tremendous results.

1:16Perfect.

1:18Hopefully that works and makes Cowboy run around and have

1:20a good time and enjoy life.

1:23I'm a firm believer in let's try the least

1:26invasive method first.

1:27Laser therapy is one of the newer therapies

1:29that is used in veterinary medicine.

1:31As a matter of fact, 20 years ago

1:33when I graduated vet school, it wasn't even an option.

1:35I wasn't even taught the technology

1:37because it didn't exist.

1:38NARRATOR: Laser therapy uses pure light

1:40of a single wavelength to reduce inflammation

1:43and stimulate tissue repair.

1:45All right.

1:47Great patient.

1:48Does he get much time in the pasture?

1:50TIFFANY NEWMAN: He does.

1:51We try and leave him in the pasture 24/7.

1:54Ooh.

1:55So-- hey, I'm sorry, bud.

1:57He may be feeling a little bit of a warm sensation,

1:59but absolutely no pain at all.

2:03I just want to kind of loosen that tendon up a little bit.

2:05What's my count down there, Paulie?

2:07Five seconds.

2:08DR. HODGES: Five seconds.

2:09The laser machine, we use it on everything.

2:12We use it on dogs, cats, mice, turtles--

2:14Turtles.

2:15--anything.

2:16[laughs]

2:17And one.

2:18Awesome job, Cowboy.

2:19Awesome job.

2:20So you got the same treatment that all

2:23the NFL and NBA athletes got.

2:25TIFFANY NEWMAN: There you go. You're the next Tom Brady.

2:26DR. HODGES: There you go.

2:27You're the new Tom Brady.

2:32Let's walk around a little bit, see how you feel.

2:37It seemed like he's starting to show some response

2:39to the treatment already.

2:40I think with some more treatments,

2:42he should do pretty well.

2:44Dr. Hodges said it would take a few days to really

2:47have the inflammation go down.

2:48So to see results right away was just like, wow, all right,

2:51now I'm excited to see what he looks like, you know, two

2:54to three days from now.
