I'm like, "Oh, my gosh."

the final episode, or...
2:17-Oh, yeah, yeah,
I've seen it twice, yeah.
2:19So, we were here in New York
just before Christmas,
2:22like, wrapping up some press.
2:24And so we got to watch
it together in a cinema here,
2:29I was sat next to Cara Buono,
2:30and we were just in tears
the whole time.
2:35And then I watched it again
at New Year, as well.
2:37Again, burst into tears.
2:39And it's wild because,
like, you know, playing Vecna,
2:42I'm -- you know,
I have my own agenda.
2:45I'm, like,
in that space the whole time.
2:47So to watch the show
and to see my fellow castmates
2:51and see them in their fullness
and in their humanity,
2:54it's just, like,
a beautiful experience.
2:55And it's just been stunning.
2:57-It was an emotional episode.
2:59I mean,
and crushed all records again
3:01and even millions
saw it in theaters.
3:03I was so psyched
they played it in theaters, too,
3:06because the reactions online,
3:08you see people freaking out and
stuff like that, it's fantastic.
3:09-Yes.
-Uh, I want to tell everyone

3:37Did you know that, uh,
Vecna was going to die?
3:39When, uh --
When did you find out?
3:41-I found out at the
table read for Episode 8.
3:43-You did?
-Yeah. Yeah, that was it.
3:45You know, um,
which was again, like,
3:47a really strange experience
3:49because I got COVID
for that table read.
3:53And so everybody's in, like,
in the studio in Atlanta,
3:55and I'm stuck behind
a computer screen
3:57in my little apartment
in Atlanta
4:00watching everybody, isolated,
alone, lonely, like Vecna.
4:05-Really are a method actor.
Wow. Yeah.
4:08-Yeah, fully committing
to the bit.
4:10Yeah, exactly, exactly.
4:12-But -- So you found that
out, and I think --
4:14I mean, I'm happy with that.
4:16I think
that's the ending that...right?
4:19-Yeah. It's the ending
the show deserves.
4:20I mean, I'm like -- I've been a
fan of the show since the start,
4:23so, like,
even just joining the show
4:25was a huge achievement,
I suppose.
4:27And just, like,
I felt very honored
4:29and blessed to be a part of it.
-Yeah.
4:31-And even as the actor
that plays Vecna, like,
4:33it just -- it feels right.
You know, the show is so much
4:36about friendship and love
and hope and joy.
4:39And of course, like, the person
who is not that has to go,
4:43you know?
[ Laughter ]
4:45All he really needs is a hug,
though.
4:47-That's all he really needed
was a hug, yeah.
4:49You have one last big fight
with Eleven,
4:51played by the great
Millie Bobby Brown,
4:53who was phenomenal, as well.
4:55And Netflix actually sent us
footage of you two rehearsing.
4:57-Oh, my gosh.
-Let's take a look at this.
5:05-This is the alt ending.

5:13I mean, did you guys often talk
before filming a scene, or...?
5:16-Yeah.
Sorry, I was just looking
5:18at my butt so much
in that video.
5:25Yeah, we --
Millie and I speak often.
5:26Like, when we met
for Season 4,
5:29we became really close,
really, really quickly.
5:31So we do speak often,
5:33but we didn't really talk about,
like, the emotional impact
5:36that that scene was gonna have
and kind of what that meant.
5:38Like, the ending of the show
really did sneak up on me.
5:42Like, all of a sudden,
that's it.
5:43You know, like, it's Vecna
dying, which is bizarre.
5:47But when we watched Episode 8,
I called her, I FaceTimed her,
5:51I left her a message, because
she didn't pick up at first.
5:53Millie. Um...
[ Laughter ]
5:55She did call me back afterwards,
immediately.
5:58But I was in floods of tears
because, like, she's been --
6:01this show has been
such a huge part of my life.
6:04I'm so grateful to be, like,
a small part of hers, as well.
6:08-Doing this together.
-Yeah, exactly.
6:10And it's just been --
It's just been stunning.
6:12So, I love her to bits.
6:14And, like, I get very emotional
talking about her. She's great.
6:17-We had Jake Connelly
on the show, who plays Derek.
6:20-Yes.
-Who was unbelievable.
6:22He is -- Oh, my gosh.
He's phenomenal.
6:24And he came on the show,
and I asked him,
6:26before the finale,
to write a question for you
6:29that we'll seal and only open
when you come on the show.

the answer to that.

the question is
6:35because I haven't opened it.

It's unbelievable.

7:13-I feel lighter because of it.

7:15It felt -- again,
like, it felt appropriate.
7:19I mean, and to have Winona Ryder
cutting off your head
7:22is pretty -- pretty cool.
7:23-Oh, and she had one of
the best lines of the episode.
7:26-She really did.
-Oh, nailed it.
7:27She nailed it. It was so good.
-It was so intense.
7:30And, like, she's so sweet
and so kind.
7:32And she was like,
"I don't want to hurt you."
7:33And I was like, "No, it's fine.
We're all in this together.
7:35It's gonna be great."
And then, like,
7:37I'm gurgling on the spike,
like -- [ Gurgling ]
7:39It's like -- it's a lot.
-You did a great job.
7:41-Thank you so much.
-But that gurgling is --

7:45-How would you even
practice for that? I mean...
7:47-A lot of water
in the mouth in the morning.
7:49Just, like, sat there.
Yeah, yeah, it's gross.
7:51-Yeah.
And you nailed it.
7:52And did you -- did you --
did you say something?
7:55-I -- I wanted to try and convey
the words, "Please don't."
8:01I don't know if anybody here
has seen "The First Shadow,"
8:04which is the play that they've
done of "Stranger Things"
8:07and the sort of Henry Creel
backstory, and, obviously,
8:10like, Henry and Joyce, within
that, have met each other.
8:14So when she kind of walks
up to him,
8:15I felt like, in that moment,
8:17that the humanity could
come through a little bit more
8:21and that we could
just reintroduce that level
8:24of sort of potential "Maybe he
could be saved" at that point.
8:28And when we were doing
Season 4,
8:30there's a bit where, like,
Eleven turns Vecna around.
8:33It's when we're in the Snow Ball
and she says, "Hi."
8:35And just before that,
I sort of growl.
8:37And we were in ADR,
and I was like,
8:39"It looks like I'm saying
the word 'You.'
8:41Can I add that in in ADR?"
8:43And they were like, "Yeah, yeah,
sure. Let's try it."
8:44I don't want to step on her line
and make her line not cool,
8:48So we tried it,
and it worked, and it was great.
8:50Anyway, we get to ADR
for Season 5,
8:51I'm, like, gurgling ,
and I'm like,
8:53I remember all I wanted to say
was, "Please, don't,"
8:55and we try it,
and it just didn't work.
8:56It didn't land. But the emotion
is there, like --
8:58-So you tried "Please don't"?
-I tried it, yeah.
9:02-It just didn't fit
the character.
9:03-No.
-Did you say "you," I think?
9:06-Yeah, I did. I said, "You,"
in Season 4, yeah.
9:08I was like, "You," yeah.
-Yeah.
9:10How do you even --
that right there getting that,
9:12oh, my God, I'm getting...

9:28that your body really changed
between Season 4...

9:52and kind of a different shape.

was that just a choice
10:02or just 'cause he's
more powerful now?
10:04-Yeah. I think, you know,
at the end of 4,
10:07he gets thrown out a window,
shot, and set on fire.
10:10-There you go.
-It's, you know --
10:11It's a lot to go through.

And within that, like,
10:15I know Michael Maher
and the Duffers wanted to --
10:18Michael's our VFX supervisor
and coordinator.
10:21And, like, he wanted to make him
have parts of him missing.
10:25Um, and I think, also,
just bring in a bit more
10:27of the sort of Vecna
from D&D, as well, actually,
10:30ultimately, from what I've seen.
10:32And so within that,
it was more of like sort of
10:34cross-collaboration between
departments of, like,
10:37Barrie Gower and the BGFX team
10:39sort of here upwards
was, um, prosthetic.
10:41-An insane job.
They did such a phenomenal job.
10:43-Huge.
Yeah, it was amazing.
10:45-Um, even making
the characters younger, too,
10:48and just having real actors,
like, running around
10:50but with, like,
dots in their face,
10:52and then they put the actor's
face on the little --
10:57This is crazy that
we can do this type of stuff.
11:01And good acting, too, for those
kids who were playing young Will
11:03and you go --
and Millie and everything.
11:05I have one here you brought,
behind the scenes, of...
11:09What's happening with Vecna

11:12Uh, I don't remember this scene.
11:16Uh, was he getting ready
to travel?
11:19Was, uh...

as we were shooting that scene,
11:38or just before
we shot that scene,
11:39I was listening to that really
heavy music,
11:40and they're like,
"Okay, it's go time."
11:42So I hand off my headphones
to a member of the team,
11:44and they come up to me after
the take, and they're like,
11:46"I couldn't turn the music off.
I had to leave set.
11:48Your headphones
were blaring at me."
11:53-How about this, uh --

11:55This is very cool
that you brought this.
11:57This is you and young Henry.
12:01-Yeah, that's --
that's Episode 8.
12:03That's it.
You know, that was --
12:04that was the day that it all
12:06kind of culminated for me.
12:08Again, that was the day that
I really wanted to be injecting
12:10that humanity into Henry
and that little lost boy that,
12:14you know, ultimately could
have just done with some love.
12:17And the young boy playing
the young me was incredible,
12:20needed no advice from me,
no guidance, nothing whatsoever.
12:24And I was in full tears,
you know, throughout the day.
12:26-When you're doing your scene,
are you watching him,
12:28or are you just --
they're just describing?
12:31-We were together in the scene.
Like, I'm actually watching him.
12:34Yeah, it was heartbreaking.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
12:36-You just played it so well.
-Thank you so much.
