0:12we use modern technology you know but

0:15put nature first the global implications

0:18of doing high-tech indoor Farms is that

0:20you can grow a lot more food with a lot

0:22fewer resources and much less impact on

0:25the environment and that's critical for

0:26the future when you look at the numbers

0:28on what's happening with water shortages

0:30the depletion of soil

0:33and climate severe weather events that

0:36are wiping out crops it is now it's not

0:39the future we need to be doing this now

1:00right now we've set out to not only open

1:03this Berea facility which will be one of

1:05the largest leafy green facilities in

1:06the U.S but build a network of high-tech

1:09Farms here in central Appalachia that

1:11cross leafy greens strawberries tomatoes

1:14and other Vine crops

1:17we started farming thousands of years

1:19ago and technology has advanced from the

1:22wheel to the Tractor to now ai and

1:25Robotics and software and sensors

1:27combining that into how we grow food in

1:31align with the planet better that is our

1:33mission

1:35the problems happening in the western

1:37part of the U.S right now are dire we

1:40have to use our water in a more precious

1:42way to me that problem of how do we

1:45solve our water crisis in the U.S we do

1:48it with Farms like this

1:50This indoor Farm you can see has some

1:53unique features we use 90 less water

1:55than traditional farms and the reason is

1:58our indoor Farm is a closed system we

2:01capture rain water on our roof we send

2:03it through gullies and pipes into a

2:05retention Pond and then we make sure

2:07using sensors that the plants only get

2:10what they actually need so our indoor

2:12farms and this type of contactless

2:15growing benefits both food safety and

2:18food waste we don't have concerns about

2:20E coli we've heard about E coli

2:22outbreaks this summer and indoor Farms

2:24can be very efficient because we can

2:26grow 24 7. we have a very large roof

2:29with glass panels which means we use a

2:32lot of passive solar but we also use

2:34lighting overnight to continue to help

2:36the plants grow LED lighting has been a

2:38huge Innovation that's really enabled

2:40this sector to be much more energy

2:42efficient but I think the energy to

2:44support this type of farming is where

2:46we're going to see tremendous Innovation

2:47over the next five years so I think

2:49that's coming and that's really exciting

2:51to me farming is not what you think of

2:53when you think of your grandma or

2:55Grandpa riding a tractor around and we

2:57respect that and we appreciate the

2:59tradition of farming but farming is

3:01smartphones and tablets to operate

3:04software and sensors and use technology

3:06to grow food and we have to now plant

3:09that seed with young people to think of

3:11careers and Futures inside of a pathway

3:14of farming that didn't exist 20 years

3:18my name is Jacob ball I'm the

3:19agriculture teacher at Carter G Woodson

3:21Academy Carter G Woodson Academy is an

3:22all-male college preparatory program we

3:24teach you the lens of African American

3:26history and culture and also incorporate

3:28Hispanic history and culture so the

3:30container farm that we're fortunate to

3:31have here is a shipping container that

3:33has been retrofitted as a hydroponic

3:36Farm

3:37we are one of 12 schools in the Eastern

3:39Kentucky Region that are fortunate to be

3:41partnering with AB Harvest as more and

3:44more schools come on board we're

3:45actually building a network of teachers

3:47that are collaborating together with

3:49other students across the region

3:51we've kind of learned the best way to

3:54get our nutrient levels pH water light

3:56temperature humidity we control all

3:59those factors for the best best growing

4:01environment basically every two weeks

4:02we're harvesting and then it's going to

4:04local community members through a CSA

4:06program or to our local cafeteria I'm

4:08really proud of myself I'm really proud

4:10of this program hopefully in the future

4:11I'll be able to show my kids just how

4:13much we've been able to accomplish and

4:16just four years

4:20agriculture is a way that students can

4:23get involved in a career get involved in

4:25an industry that plays such an important

4:27role in the sustainability of our planet

4:30the sustainability of our societies I

4:32think the more we can get these systems

4:34in place and continuously improve them

4:37which there's so much potential for in

4:38the future and so many opportunities to

4:40bring in more Innovation more high-tech

4:43strategies it's just going to benefit us

4:45as a region and as a country to be

4:48self-sufficient in terms of our food

4:49innovate or die

4:51you know we're on this finite plane at

4:53this rock that's flying around the sun

4:55called planet Earth and it's burning

4:58we can either use technology and

5:00innovate or we can see things crumble

5:02around us so this is a mission it's a

5:05career and what can we do to use private

5:07sector tools use technology build stuff

5:11and try to give us a fighting chance to

5:13hand a better future to that next

5:14generation and I truly believe app
