Ho Chi Minh City to Spend $280M a Year for Free Bus Travel

These bus routes are the main public transport in the city, but buses to other provinces are not included.
The city now spends VND1.5 trillion each year to help bus companies, said Bui Hoa An.
The city will use technology to track how many people use the buses and use this data to manage the system.
More people are expected to use the buses, so the city will add more buses and make the routes more efficient.
The plan will be finalized and sent to the city council for approval this month.
Ho Chi Minh City has 179 bus routes with over 2,100 buses, and some people can already travel for free.
In 2025, almost 97 million people used the buses, which is 6% more than the year before.
The city has already started using electric buses and cashless payments to attract more riders.
