On Monday, more than 90 flights were canceled at the airport due to severe snow conditions, prompting airport officials to open sections of the terminal overnight to assist stranded passengers, according to Japan Today.
Over 2,000 individuals were compelled to remain at New Chitose Airport from Monday night into Tuesday.
While main roads remained accessible, social media updates from stranded travelers detailed chaotic scenes within the airport.
Users on X labeled the situation as "disaster level," mentioning overcrowding and taxi lines extending to over 200 people.
One post stated, "It's crammed with individuals who are unable to leave."
Hokkaido has experienced ongoing heavy snowfall in recent days.
Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, received up to 65 cm of snow in the 48 hours leading up to 10 p.m. Monday, marking the highest amount recorded since data collection began in 1999, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
