0:00In this video, I'm going to focus on two consonant sounds.
0:04The sounds /f/ and /v/.
0:08So the ‘f’ sound and the ‘v’ sound.
0:11They may sound similar but they are actually
quite different.
0:15And they are very important sounds in the
English language
0:19so I really want you to be able to hear the
difference
0:22and pronounce them correctly.
0:25Let's take two example words.
0:27The first word is the word ‘fan’.
0:30Can you hear the /f/ sound?
0:36The second word is ‘van’.
0:40Can you hear the /v/ sound this time?
0:50They sound really similar, but they are different.
0:53And we're gonna practice together.
0:55By the end of this video, you will be able
to pronounce them correctly.
1:05Before learning about the /f/ and /v/ sounds
in English,
1:10you need to focus on the IPA spelling.
1:15You can also watch how I move my mouth,
and obviously you need to repeat after me in this video.
1:22I know you can make those sounds guys so let's
do it together now.
1:26First, let's produce the /f/sound in English.
1:31What you're going to do is -
you're not going to use your voice.
1:35It's a voiceless sound so no vibration in
your throat.
1:40You are going to place your teeth against
your bottom lip
1:47and you're going to push out some air through
your teeth and your bottom lip.
1:55Okay, please watch my mouth and repeat
after me.
2:11Let's practice with the word ‘fan’.
2:31As for the/v/sound, it's exactly the same as the/f/sound.
2:37But this time, you are going to use your voice.
2:40It's a voiced sound so you are going to feel
some vibration.
2:49Can you please repeat after me.
3:02Let's practice with the word ‘van’.
3:05Please repeat after me.
3:21Let's now practice with minimal pairs.
3:24Words that sound very very much alike but
the sounds are actually different.
3:30They are very useful if you really want to
hear the difference between the two sounds.
3:36First, let's practice producing the sounds
themselves.
3:40Please repeat after me.
4:15Repeat after me, guys.
4:35Let's now take our words.
5:03Let's now go through minimal pairs together.
5:07Please watch me and how I move my mouth.
7:49Let's now practice with a few sentences containing
these consonant sounds.
7:55The first sentence is,
‘The vendor sold me a new fender.’
8:02Please repeat after me.
8:04‘The vendor sold me a new fender.’
8:15‘Live a fast and vast life.’
8:20Please repeat after me.
8:22‘Live a fast and vast life.’
8:31And finally,
‘Save your money in the safe.’
8:36Please repeat after me.
8:38‘Save your money in the safe.’
8:48Let's now move on to listening practice.
8:52I'm now going to show you two words.
8:55I will say one of the two words
and I want you to listen very carefully and
9:01to tell me if this word is
‘a’ or ‘b’
9:08So you have two words, ‘a’ and ‘b’.
9:11Now which one do I say?
9:28It's ‘a’, guys – ‘belief’.
9:31‘b’ would be ‘believe’.
10:01‘a’ would be ‘calf’.
10:29‘b’ would be ‘vendor’.
10:45‘a’ is pronounced ‘fairy’.
11:10‘a’, ‘b’ - what do you think guys?
11:16‘a’ would be pronounced ‘staff’.
11:33And the last two words
surf
11:46‘b’ would be ‘serve’.
11:51You now understand the difference between
these two consonant sounds.
11:55The /f/ sound and the/v/sound in English.
11:59Of course it takes a lot of listening and
speaking practice to master these sounds,
12:06So keep practicing to be able to pronounce
them correctly
12:10and to train your ear to hear the differences
between the sounds.
12:15Also make sure to watch my other pronunciation
videos
12:19if you want to improve your English skills.
