4:41-This has been three guys
from Boston
4:43say every town and city
in Massachusetts.
4:46-Feel the love right there
for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon!
4:51[ Cheers and applause ]
4:53Thank you for coming
on the show.
4:55I'm always honored
to have you guys here.
4:56I appreciate this.
I got to talk about "The Rip."
4:58It's fantastic. Great movie.
5:00But first I have to get to some
hard-hitting news and scandal
5:03out there about you, Ben.
5:05-Uh-oh.
-Well, yeah, sure.
5:07Why change now?
-Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
5:08I figured I'd go with
the hard-hitting question.
5:10This is a big headline
that I saw.
5:13Did Ben Affleck
quit wearing sneakers?
5:16This is a big--
People are really--
5:18-Yeah. No.
And I'm working through this.
5:20-This is headline news.
5:22-I have nothing
to say to that.
5:23I have no response.
-What did that come from?
5:26-I'm not sure, but if that's
the big scandal in your life,
5:28things are probably okay.
5:30-It's kind of great that
the big scandal in your life
5:32is you're old enough now
that they worry
5:34if you're wearing
comfortable shoes.
5:36-Orthopedics. I'm good, "GQ."
5:40Matt, the thing that is going
all over the Internet is you,
5:43by the way, all ripped for
"The Odyssey," by the way.
5:45Look at this thing.
Oh, my God. Dude. Wow!
5:48[ Cheers and applause ]
-You know, that's great.
5:50You know, I'm in shape.
5:52[ Laughter ]
-I know. You're-- Yes.
5:54-I'm in shape.
A guy gets in shape once...
5:57-Yeah.
-I quit wearing sneakers.
5:59You know?
How about "Still in shape"?
6:01-That could be
a better headline.
6:03Man, oh, man. What was--
What's the deal with this?
6:05You just gotten a full-on
trainer, and, I mean, you're--
6:09-It looks like a guy
who just stepped into
really cold water, right?
6:11-No, no, it does not.
-"Aah!"
6:15-Actually the shells on that
beach were, like, really jagged,
6:18and I was walking like that.
6:20Because that's a paparazzi
shot from in between takes.
6:23-Oh, it's not even
from the movie?
6:25-No.
-There's no scene
where you were like...
6:26-No, there's no scene where
Odysseus is like, "Oh, my feet."
6:31-How was shooting this movie?
Christopher Nolan?
6:35-Yeah, it was absolutely the
pinnacle of my entire career.
6:38I loved every minute of it.
6:40-You think so? Really?
-Yeah, I just loved it.
6:41-[ Cheers and applause ]
-Amazing.
6:43And, Ben, you visited--
you visited on set?
6:46-Yeah, I did,
and I'm a huge fan of Chris'.
6:49And, you know,
it was one of those things
6:51where my kids never want to come
to the set when I'm working.
6:53"Hey, you guys,
we're doing a thing on the set."
6:55And they're like,
"No, I got school."
6:57-They'd rather go to school.
-Right? "No, I got detention."
7:00But, uh, they were really
psyched to come visit this set.
7:04My middle child's
really interested
7:06in actually reading the "Iliad"
and the "Odyssey,"
7:09and we went there,
and it was really great.
7:11I mean, it was
this incredible sort of, like--
7:14You know, this is the way
that Hollywood made movies
7:17and they were great, epic,
in-camera, David Lean movies.
7:20And Chris is a really serious
guy and somebody I admire
7:22and, I know, you know, believes
the set's a place to work.
7:25It's not schmoozing or whatever,
so I was really, honestly
7:28grateful that he let me come by
and visit.
7:30My kids really liked it.
7:31And so it was kind of cool.
It was really, really nice.
7:34I was deeply grateful to him.
7:35-You were the only guest
in six months of shooting.
7:38-Is that right? Really?
-It's so sweet.
7:40-Yeah, no, it's just--
it's just the workload.
7:44It was such an ambitious project
7:45that the amount of work
that needed to be done,
7:47there was just no time
for anything else.
7:49I mean, it was really-- it was--
7:50I've never, ever done a movie
7:53that just required
every single person to work
7:56to kind of give maximum effort.
7:58Like-- I said to him
when I got back
8:00that every location
on that movie would have been
8:03the hardest location on
any other movie I've ever done
8:05and any day of work would have
been harder than any other day
8:07on any other movie
I've ever done.
8:09-Really?
-It reminded me
8:10of when we were kids
when we'd talk on the phone.
8:11I'd be like,
"So what's going on today?
8:13You're shooting a movie?
What's it like?"
8:14-Yeah.
-"We're in a boat today."
8:18-But, like, the day I went,
there was, like, a boat
8:19and these massive jet engines,
and they actually made a storm
8:23and the boat cracked and
the warriors went in the water.
8:25I was like,
"Ah! This is amazing!"
8:27-"This is what we do!"
Oh, that's fantastic.
8:30I know you guys have known
each other forever
8:32and we've heard every story,
but I've heard some story.
8:34I don't know if it's true.
8:36Did you once get injured
with an acorn?
8:38-Yeah. Yes.
-It was our biggest fight.
8:40-That was a big-- Yeah. Yeah.
8:41We were doing a movie
together called "School Ties"
8:44like 35 years ago,
and we were--
8:46And it was a bunch of--
We were 19, 20 years old.
8:49And there were a bunch of us.
8:50It was-- Brendan Fraser
was in the movie.
8:52Cole Hauser was in the movie.
Chris O'Donnell.
8:54There was a bunch of us,
and in between takes,
8:56we were just bored and we
were walking across this school
8:59where we were shooting,
and there were acorns,
9:00and so we just started
whipping them at each other.
9:03-Because when you're 19,
that seems like a good idea.
9:04-It seemed like a good way
to pass the time.
9:07And he threw one at Cole,
and Cole moved,
9:09and I turned, and
it literally hit me in the eye.
9:12And it's the only time
in my life I've ever had--
9:13Like, didn't have time to blink.
And I had to go to the hospital.
9:17Like, I literally--
-Mind you, I had like
9:19three lines in the movie.
9:21And while I cared
about Matt having vision,
9:23my first thought was,
"I gotta be fired for this."
9:27-You're like, "That's it."
9:29-But, yeah, I went to--
They gave me an eye patch
9:31that I had to wear
for a few days.
9:32-Oh, my God!
-Yeah, yeah, no.
9:33I was like-- He really--
-Fastball.
9:35-Well, I mean, listen, if
you're gonna play with fire...
9:40-But the first A.D.
also had an eye patch.
9:43-Newt Arnold had an eye patch.
9:44He was a great first A.D.,
old first A.D.
9:46And that was the one...
-...swap eye patches.
9:49-No, we took pictures
together with our eye patches.
9:52-...do a pirate movie.
-This is our--
9:54This is a big show for us
9:55because we're following
the NBA on NBC.
9:58And I was going to ask you.
9:59Last time, we had Martha Stewart
on the show,
10:00she said that she sat courtside,
10:02and Jalen Brunson stepped
on her toe and broke her toe.
10:04Uh, I've seen you guys
courtside before.
10:07Anyone ever fell on you or...?
10:10-I went to--
I went to a Lakers game,
10:12uh, with my son,
I guess, last year.
10:15And it was Luca's, like--
10:16I think one of the first
or second games
10:18that he was playing
after the trade.
10:20-Ohh.
-And, uh, I was pretty honored
10:22because he did come
caroming into the stands,
10:25knock to the guy next to me,
spilled all his beer on me
10:28and kind of--
I don't know you say this
10:29on, you know,
national television,
10:31but he was positioned
in a way towards me
10:33where his main, least attractive
part was right in my face.
10:37And I think that they got
some photos of that.
10:40-Lucky you.
-My son loved it.
10:41-Yeah. Yeah, he loved it.
10:44-I had a great experience
in 2008
10:47where the Celtics were
playing the Lakers, and I got--
10:50-[ Scattered applause ]
-Yeah, and I got tickets
10:52through our agent
and was sitting there,
10:55and Mark Wahlberg was--
10:57I got two seats.
Mark got two seats.
10:58And so we were sitting
by each other,
11:00and Phil Jackson--
The Celtics went on a run,
11:02and Mark and I were
next to the Lakers bench.
11:04Like, we had
such incredible seats.
11:07And we jumped up,
and we were, you know,
11:08probably a little Boston,
a little obnoxious.
11:11And Phil Jackson jumped,
called a timeout,
11:14and turned and literally said--
You're gonna have to bleep this.
11:16He goes, "Sit down
and shut the [bleep] up!"
11:20To me and Mark.
-To you and Mark Wahlberg?
11:22-Yeah, yeah.
-Phil Jackson?
11:23-And we were like, "Aaaah!"
-That's pretty cool.
11:27We're like, "We're in the--
11:28This is the history
of the Celtics/Lakers.
11:30Like, we're, like,
extras in the..."
11:33-You're in the history books.
11:34-It was great.
-That's so fun.
11:36Let's talk about "The Rip."
Congratulations on this.
11:38Oh, my gosh.
-Thank you. Thank you.
11:40-You two star together
on screen.
11:44Uh, tell about this story.
11:46By the way, so many twists and
turns, and it's so thrilling,
11:50and it's almost like you don't
know what's gonna happen.
11:53-This is Joe Carnahan...
-Oh, it's fantastic.
11:55-...who also wrote it,
and he spent a lot of time
11:57with this team down in Miami.
11:58They're called
the Tactical Narcotics Team.
12:00And they, uh, raid these houses
and they seize money.
12:04Like, money that's kind of
from ill-gotten gains, you know,
12:08like, drug money
or weapons money, you know,
12:10and they seize the money.
12:11And down in Miami,
they have to count it on site.
12:16And so this is based on--
inspired by something
12:18that really did happen
where this team went in
12:20to hit a house thinking
they were gonna get,
12:22you know, 70,000 bucks
or whatever was hidden there
12:24because they have these dogs
that actually smell money.
12:28So the dog, you know--
They got a tip on this house.
12:32They went in, the dog
alerted that there was
something in there.
12:34They went in,
and there was over $20 million
12:37in the walls of this house.
12:38-$20 million?
-$20 million.
12:41And so this team now
is in this house,
12:43and they're kind of stuck there
12:45because they have to
count it on site.
12:46-You have to count every dollar?
-And they know
12:48that people are probably
gonna come back for it,
12:51so that's kind of
the premise of the movie, um,
12:54where these guys--
And it kind of tests their own--
12:57you know, the loyalties
within the team
12:59because there are rumblings
13:01that there might be
somebody corrupt.
13:02There might be a bad apple
in the gang.
13:04And so that's kind of
what the movie is.
13:07It's a crime thriller, but also,
like, a whodunit, you know?
13:09-And what would you do
in that situation if, like,
13:11you go in and you think
it's 70 grand, it's 20 million?
13:13You're like,
"Hey, if we all agree..."
13:17-That's kind of the poster
for the movie.
13:19-If we all agree
that we only found $70,000,
13:22let's go on vacation somewhere,
you know?
13:24-Yeah, yeah, exactly.
13:25But they-- But-- Yeah.
13:27-It's loosely based on...
13:29-It's loosely based on it, and
the real guys, the real team,
13:31we got to go work with them
and go down to Miami.
13:33-What was that like?
-Great.
13:35I mean, just any time
you do research like that.
13:37-I mean, these are guys, like--
13:38Part of what
was really kind of--
13:40First, it was this great--
13:41Like you say, it's a thriller,
it's a whodunit.
13:43It's got a very kind of
classic throwback setup,
13:46but it's a very modern take
on it.
13:47And-- But it depends on
you really believing
13:51and investing in these people,
13:52this team of cops
that go in there
13:55because it's not like somebody's
the good guy and the bad guy.
13:57It's that we're all kind of--
13:59It's about what happens
with temptation,
14:00how people turn on each other
14:01and not knowing
who you can trust.
14:03-Yes.
-And you got to make
14:05those performances
as realistic as possible.
14:07And Joe did a really cool thing,
which not only brought us
14:09down there to meet them,
but also brought those guys up
14:12when we shot in LA
and in New Jersey.
14:14And so all the real cops and
detectives were in the movie.
14:18Like, so you really
feel like a real cop
14:20when the guy next to you
is a real cop.
14:22-Is an actual real cop.
14:24-And they were pretty good
actors, too, it turns out,
14:25I guess from being undercover.
14:27-It's so good.
The cast is fantastic.
14:28Teyana Taylor.
-Yeah.
14:29-Amazing.
-Steven Yeun.
14:31-Steven Yeun. Oh, yeah.
-Kyle Chandler.
14:33It's on Netflix.
It's really, really good.
14:36-Yeah, it's a really,
really good cast.
14:38-Up until the end,
you're like, "What is going on?"
14:40I didn't know who--
It was fantastic.
14:41It was great.
And you also produced this film.
14:45The name of your company is...
-Artists Equity.
14:47-Artists Equity.
Can you explain to everyone
14:48kind of what
you're doing with this?
14:50-This thing is basically,
you know--
14:51Netflix obviously
is a streaming platform.
14:53Business is obviously changing.
There's been a lot going on.
14:56And what we're kind of trying
to do is, in the old days,
14:58they were sort of--
You knew how a movie did
15:00and you could get bonuses based
on the box-office performance.
15:03And what we wanted to do
was try to adapt that model
15:05to what's happening on streaming
for a bunch of reasons.
15:09But basically, one of the things
that was important to us
15:11is we really believe
that it's not just the cast
15:13and the writers
and the directors,
15:15but that the environment,
every single person involved,
15:17that if they're committed
to making the movie good,
15:19it's very likely to be better.
15:21It's really
a collaborative art form.
15:23And so the structure
that we created...
15:26Look, you know,
the more people that watch it,
15:28the more levels it will hit,
15:29but the thing that was
important to us principally
15:31was that it also includes,
you know, 1,200 crew members.
15:34You know,
every standby painter,
15:36greensman, camerawoman,
whatever it is.
15:38-That's exactly right.
-Yeah. And so...
15:41-So the more you guys
watch this movie...
15:43-Not that we could suggest
that you just leave it on.
15:45Unless you're a good person.
-We would never suggest that.
15:48-You would never say to turn on
the movie and put it on loop
15:52and just play it and play it.
-I wouldn't say that.
15:54-But if you did do it...
15:55-No, but if one
happened to do that,
15:57crew members would make
a lot of money.
16:00[ Cheers and applause ]
Just saying.
16:02I'm gonna do it this weekend.
I want to show everyone a clip.
16:05Here's Ben Affleck and
Matt Damon in "The Rip."
16:08-Let me call my brother.
-No.
16:10Your brother the fed who you
were in a fistfight with today?
16:12[ Indistinct arguing ]
16:15-[Bleep] This is my scene.
Let me run it, please.
16:17-Alright, man.
You're in charge. I get it.
16:19-No, don't do [bleep].
-Well, I'm trying to help!
16:20-You're both making
a big mistake.
16:24You should just take whatever
money you want and walk away.
16:28Before this goes
really bad for all of us.
16:38Hey. There's a black-and-white
coming up the street.
16:42-Stay off the radios.
No call-outs.
16:43Lolo, get the rest of
those containers with them.
16:45Get them to the garage.
16:49-Yeah! Come on! It's so good!
[ Cheers and applause ]
16:52Ben Affleck, Matt Damon,
everybody! "The Rip"!
