Search for Martyrs' Remains at Le Thi Rieng Park

The city will begin excavation work at the park later this month after finding underground anomalies.
The announcement was made on June 19 during a conference about the search for martyrs' remains.
A ceremony will start the excavation and recovery mission in late June, said Major General Nguyen Thanh Trung.
The search will last about three months, then a memorial service and reburial ceremony will be held in late September. The excavation will focus on three areas.
There is enough evidence of a collective burial site.
Investigations used old records, US military documents, eyewitness accounts, and field surveys to find the site.
The reported burial site of soldiers from the 1968 Tet Offensive matches the location of Le Thi Rieng Park.
The High Command found enough evidence to confirm a collective martyrs' grave, so they can start detailed surveys and excavation.
On June 15, the High Command worked with other groups to do radar surveys across three areas in the park.
Major General Nguyen Thanh Trung said all sources point to the same location, with eyewitness testimony and technical survey results matching.
All sources point to the same location. The search has five stages, and four are done. The last stage is excavation and recovery.
Excavation will follow a phased approach.
The operation will start with easy areas, then move to harder sections.
The approach will prioritize easier areas first, ensuring a careful process.
Before excavation, engineers will clear the area and install safety signs. Then, heavy machinery will remove surface layers.
Once excavation reaches undisturbed soil, teams will switch to manual excavation and remove soil in thin layers.
The Ho Chi Minh City High Command will advise the government and coordinate with agencies to ensure the operation goes as planned.
Major General Tran Chi Tam called on units to organize recovery teams and designate leaders for coordination.
Temporary facilities will be set up to support personnel.
More equipment may be needed during later stages of excavation.
Military Region 7 commended local authorities for completing perimeter fencing and urged agencies to prepare for the next phase.
