2nd Arrest in Calgary Case Involving Extortion of South Asian Community

A 21-year-old man was charged after a traffic stop helped police in an extortion case.
Police stopped a vehicle on March 7. It was linked to a shooting on March 4.
The vehicle was taken, and police collected evidence.
Evidence and past incidents helped police find links between suspects and vehicles.
Jaskaran Singh, 21, was charged with firing a gun. His arrest is part of the extortion case.
This arrest is a big win, said Supt. Jeff Bell. Police will keep looking for those responsible.
Singh's arrest is the second this week. Rana Cheema, 45, was charged on April 1.
Extortion by South Asians against their community started making news two years ago.
Police in Alberta and B.C. are working together to investigate crimes across areas.
Extortions have led to threats, shootings, and crimes in Edmonton and Calgary.
Police found that criminal networks recruit new South Asian arrivals for crimes.
The CBSA has opened 372 immigration investigations as of March 12.
Calgary had 41 extortion attempts since January 2025, including 18 shootings.
Victims get threats on phone calls and social media. Police ask victims to come forward.
Police advise those targeted to take steps if they get threats or demands for payment.
More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
