New Train Route Could Connect UK to Europe

Eurostar might offer a new direct route from London to three European cities.
Eurostar, SBB, and SNCF Voyageurs signed a deal to connect London and Switzerland.
The new route could have direct trains from London to Zurich, Basel, and Geneva.
Direct trains could cut journey times by up to two hours.
Currently, passengers need to change trains in Paris, which is less convenient and takes longer. This means taking luggage on the metro and adding an hour to the journey.
Eurostar's press release said the deal is an important step. The next step is to plan timetables and operations. Then, they will decide on key steps and milestones.
The partners want to offer the direct connection as soon as possible. They are working on the project and think it could start in the 2030s.
Eurostar currently offers direct trains to five cities. Passengers can also book connecting trains to over 20 destinations.
Eurostar might run longer direct routes from London to cities like Marseille and Milan.
Eurostar has ordered new trains to increase capacity on popular routes. They also have plans to expand St Pancras International station.
The station expansion could allow 5,000 passengers per hour by 2028. By 2030, arrivals will move upstairs to increase capacity. The station is working with Eurostar to expand. The expansion is important for growing passenger demand.
