State Pension Increase Could Be Bad News for Millions

The number of taxpayers over 66 has increased from 6.7 million to 8.8 million in four years, according to Vanguard. Ministers say tax is calculated on total income, and people only pay if they exceed the personal allowance.

There's an expectation that pensioners relying solely on the state pension won't pay tax. Rachel Reeves said people with only a state pension won't have to fill in a tax return, at least until 2029.

The system is close to a crucial turning point, with the state pension nearing the tax-free threshold.

For those with additional income above the state pension, 20% tax will be applied above the threshold. The triple lock has a positive effect on pensioners, as it guarantees a basic income.

However, those with other retirement income need to plan carefully to minimize tax and keep their savings.

An HM Treasury spokesperson said people with only the full new or basic state pension won't pay income tax, and this commitment will be kept for this parliament.

By keeping the triple lock, 12 million pensioners will see their income rise by up to £470 this year, and they'll continue to benefit from the highest personal allowance in the G7.

The government is committed to supporting pensioners, but the triple lock's long-term sustainability is still a concern.
