Countries Should Follow International Law: Singapore PM at ASEAN-Russia Meeting

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said countries must follow international law in a more unstable world.

He said Singapore and ASEAN want parties in conflicts to be calm, talk, and solve problems peacefully, following international law.

Prime Minister Wong explained Singapore's position on Ukraine is about supporting all countries' sovereignty, not taking sides.

Singapore is the only ASEAN country that has imposed sanctions on Russia since the Ukraine invasion.

These sanctions include controlling exports that can be used as weapons and limiting Russian banks and fundraising.

Mr. Wong attended the ASEAN-Russia summit, marking 35 years of relations and 30 years of dialogue partnership.

At the summit, ASEAN and Russia agreed to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Mr. Wong welcomed Russia's support for ASEAN and encouraged its participation in ASEAN-led forums.

Leaders adopted several documents, including the Kazan Declaration, to guide future cooperation.

They also adopted a joint statement on cultural cooperation and a plan for practical cooperation from 2026 to 2030.

Mr. Wong met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing bilateral relations and international developments.

On the sidelines, Mr. Wong met with the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, discussing cultural and educational ties.

Singapore and Tatarstan have had ties since 2007, when Lee Kuan Yew visited Tatarstan.

Next, Mr. Wong will meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.
