0:00Science is everywhere and you're
0:02interacting with it all the time in
0:04school sure but also in the news on your
0:07for you page around your dinner table
0:09and right here on YouTube that's a good
0:11thing. Science is one of the coolest
0:12things our species has going for it.
0:14Right up there with art, literature, and
0:16beday. But when it's coming at us all
0:18the time from all kinds of places, it
0:20can be hard to make sense of it. Much
0:21like a bedet, these days we're bombarded
0:24by news stories about science. Our feeds
0:27are full of everything from nutrition to
0:28climate change. On top of that, our own
0:30brains are hardwired to deceive us. We
0:32all have cognitive biases that, when
0:35left unchecked, can make it even harder
0:37to know if something is supported by
0:38evidence or not. But science isn't just
0:41a buzzword. It's a unique way of
0:44uncovering knowledge that's dynamic,
0:46communal, and self-correcting. And it's
0:49one of the best ways we have of
0:51understanding what's actually going on
0:53around here. Thinking scientifically
0:55helps us push past biases and agendas
0:57and clickbay headlines toward the
0:59elusive capital T truth. Hi, I'm Hank
1:03Green. I started making YouTube videos
1:05in 2007 with my brother John. Now, I am
1:08a go-to internet science guy, having
1:10produced and hosted literally thousands
1:12of videos and podcasts all across the
1:14internet. I also co-founded Complexly,
1:16which produces this show, Crash Course,
1:18as well as Sihow and nearly a dozen
1:20other educational YouTube channels. In
1:22seven episodes, Crash Course Scientific
1:24Thinking will explore the foundational
1:26principles that underly scientific
1:28thought. We'll pull back the curtain on
1:30peer review, take a magnifying glass to
1:32scientific sources, unpack big ideas
1:35like consensus, and consider how what we
1:37know about the world grows and changes
1:39over time. And we'll explore scientific
1:42experiments, processes, and discoveries
1:44to figure out how science has impacted
1:46our lives. By the end, you'll be able to
1:48think more critically about basically
1:50everything from your science textbooks
1:52to the news on your feed to that [music]
1:54guy who keeps yelling at you about
1:55science on TikTok. We'll learn how to
1:57sift through information wherever it
1:59comes from to inch ourselves closer to a
2:01[music] nuanced shared scientific
2:04understanding of the world. And you'll
2:06walk away a more savvy consumer of
2:13So join us here next time when we will
2:14ask a big question. Can we trust our own
2:18brains? This episode of Crash Course
2:20Scientific Thinking was produced in
2:21partnership with HHMI Bio Interactive,
2:24bringing real science stories to
2:25thousands of high school and undergrad
2:27life science classrooms. If you're a
2:29teacher, visit their website for
2:30resources that explore the topics we
2:31[music] discussed in the video today.
2:33Thanks for watching this episode of
2:34Crash Course Scientific Thinking, which
