0:02NARRATOR: January 17, 2008,
British Airways flight 38,
0:07a Boeing 777, is
approaching Heathrow
0:10after an overnight
flight from Beijing.
0:12It's just one minute
away from landing.
0:15Sculptor Paul
Stafford is returning
0:18home from a business trip.
0:20PAUL STAFFORD: It's the end of
quite a long, boring flight.
0:22We've been flying for just
over 11 hours from Beijing.
0:25I've been doing work for
the university interviewing
0:27postgraduate students.
0:28It's all very ordinary.
0:30NARRATOR: But it's soon
going to be very unordinary.
0:33Just 60 seconds from landing,
the engines suddenly fail.
0:38Captain Ian Hollingworth
takes us through the events
0:42IAN HOLLINGWORTH: They're
now in the final stages
0:43of the approach, just
to be [INAUDIBLE] to put
0:45the airplane on the ground.
0:46So they're making sure that
all the checks are complete.
0:48The captain, certainly,
is making sure
0:50that everything's fine,
the undercarriage down,
0:54The landing check's complete.
0:55They've been given
landing clearance.
0:57It's only in the last 50
seconds or so that things start
1:00to go badly awry for this crew.
1:02NARRATOR: At 750 feet, both
engines suddenly lose power.
1:05IAN HOLLINGWORTH:
Captain will look across
1:07at the engine instrumentation.
1:08There's not enough power
coming from those engines.
1:11They're getting very low.
1:12They're getting very
low on speed, as well.
1:15NARRATOR: At 600 feet,
both engines fail.
1:18The aircraft's speed
drops dangerously low.
1:22The pilots have less
than 30 seconds to react.
1:26IAN HOLLINGWORTH: Captain
looks around to see
1:28what on earth is going on.
1:29The fuel system's in
the correct position.
1:31The fuel control switch
is in the right place.
1:33Everything looks normal.
1:35NARRATOR: But it's not.
1:36The pilot is fast losing any
ability to control the plane.
1:40It begins to fall through
the sky, lifting the nose.
1:44He has moments to make a
life or death decision.
1:46IAN HOLLINGWORTH: As
the nose begins to rise
1:48and the speed begins
to drop right off,
1:50it becomes apparent
that they're not going
1:51to be able to make the runway.
1:53NARRATOR: 10 seconds
before landing,
1:55even if they can't
make the runway,
1:57they have to get over
the boundary fence.
1:59The captain needs to extend
his glide as much as he can.
2:03He raises the flaps,
streamlining the wings.
2:06IAN HOLLINGWORTH: The captain
brings the flap up to 25.
2:09The copilot lowers the nose.
2:11Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.
2:14NARRATOR: It's only
three seconds to impact.
2:16Captain Burkill's been so
busy, it's his first chance
2:19to warn air traffic control.
2:23IAN HOLLINGWORTH: Push this
forward on the control column
2:25to try to recover from
an impending stall.
2:33NARRATOR: Flight BA38 slams
down just short of the runway.
2:37 The oxygen masks come
down in front of me, all
2:39over the plane in front of me.
2:40The overhead lockers are open.
2:42Everyone's belongings
start to fly out.
2:45The plane's hurtling forward.
2:46And I'm hitting my head
on the front of the seat.
2:49And my foot's hit
the back of the seat.
2:52And I'm being thrown around.
2:53And I've no idea
what's going on.
2:54It seems to last maybe
eight, nine, ten seconds,
2:57and we shudder to a halt.
2:59IAN HOLLINGWORTH:
They land the airplane
3:00just over the
threshold of runway
3:0327 left, away from any
of the built-up areas.
3:08They survive because they did
an absolutely brilliant job.
3:12NARRATOR: It was thanks to
the pilot's quick thinking
3:15that he managed to give the
plane a critical extra 164
3:21As emergency services
arrive, passengers
3:24bail out of the stricken plane.
3:26One of the rescuers
films the aftermath.
3:29PAUL STAFFORD: And
it's all very calm.
3:31I walk away from the airplane,
maybe 100 yards, 120 yards.
3:37And I turn around, and I see
this great big modern airplane,
3:41this 777, smashed to
pieces on the floor.
3:45NARRATOR: 47 people
were injured.
3:47But thanks to the
crew's fast maneuvering,
3:49there were no fatalities.
