Vietnam Plans to Build Islands and Reclaim Land Near Phu Quoc

Leaders met on April 1 to finalize plans and start construction by 2027, with investments until 2050. They want to begin building soon.
An Giang was formed in 2025 from two old provinces, giving it control of a large coastline area.
The biggest area, 2,300 hectares, will have entertainment, resorts, and tourism facilities. It will be a main spot for international tourists in southern Vietnam. The area will also have a free trade zone and golf courses.
A 1,100-hectare area near Rach Gia will be a commercial and administrative hub, connecting the mainland to islands. It will be a green and modern urban area. Rach Gia started Vietnam's first sea reclamation project in 1999. The area will have a mixed-use model.
A 900-hectare zone will have cultural heritage, ecotourism, and community programs. It will draw on Vietnamese and Khmer traditions. The area will also have performing arts venues and wellness facilities.
The Kien Hai islands, 200 hectares, will be a maritime transit hub. They are between Rach Gia and Phu Quoc. The islands will be part of a western coastal tourism corridor.
The planning process must prioritize green development, including renewable energy and wastewater treatment. Officials will recruit investors during the planning phase. Chairman Ho Van Mung directed this.
An Giang wants tourism to be a main part of its economy. Phu Quoc will host the APEC summit in 2027. It is a special development zone for tourism and maritime services.
