Roberto De Zerbi Makes His First Move at Tottenham by Discussing a Position with a World Cup Winner

Roberto De Zerbi has already begun making moves at Tottenham, with the renowned Italian football figure Alessandro Nesta being offered a role within his coaching staff.
De Zerbi has been lured back to the Premier League and was officially announced as the new Tottenham manager on Tuesday afternoon, and he is now focusing on selecting his key team members to aid the club in avoiding relegation from the Premier League, turning his attention to one of the most exceptional defenders of the 2000s.
According to a report by the Italian outlet Tuttosport, Nesta, who is now 50 years old and was a member of the World Cup-winning team in 2006, has been given the opportunity to become De Zerbi's assistant manager, and he is currently considering the offer, although his experience in coaching has been limited to working as a head coach thus far.
Following his retirement from professional football, Nesta transitioned into a coaching career and has had stints as the head coach of Miami FC, Perugia, Frosinone, Reggiana, and Monza, and in the previous season, he was let go by Monza in December 2024 when the club was at the bottom of Serie A, only to be reappointed a mere seven weeks later.
Despite his efforts, Nesta was unable to inspire a turnaround in the team's performance, and Monza ultimately suffered relegation to Serie B after finishing in 20th place, and now Nesta has the chance to work outside of Italy.
The potential addition of Nesta would bring a wealth of experience and credibility to the team, given his impressive achievements as a player, including his time with Lazio in the early 2000s and his role in the AC Milan team that won the Champions League in both 2003 and 2007.
De Zerbi and his coaching staff are scheduled to take charge of their first game at Sunderland a week from Sunday, and the new manager has stated, 'Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be our complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season, and I am looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that.'
Alessandro Nesta may find himself in a role at Tottenham, which would be a significant development in his coaching career.
It has been reported that De Zerbi will receive an annual salary ranging from £12 million to £15 million, which would make him the third-highest-paid manager in the Premier League, and despite the threat of relegation, the Italian manager is not believed to have a release clause in his contract.
De Zerbi was quickly identified as the club's top choice after the underwhelming tenure of Igor Tudor came to an end after just 44 days and no wins, and other candidates considered by Tottenham included German coaches Edin Terzic and Marco Rose, as well as two-time former caretaker head coach Ryan Mason.
