Project saves rare flower from disappearing in Guernsey

A rare flower is saved from disappearing in Guernsey.

The dwarf pansy is found in southern Europe and the British Isles, only in Guernsey and the Isles of Scilly.

The flower was first seen in Guernsey in 1871, and it used to grow on the west coast and Lihou Island, but now it only grows in a small area at Pleinmont.

A project collected seeds from the flowers and grew them to sell later, to help the groups involved.

Helen Litchfield said the team's work means the dwarf pansy is no longer in danger.

Dwarf pansies are very rare and will not disappear soon.

Guernsey has 167 rare plant species and 34 species that only grow in a few places.

Although dwarf pansies are not for sale, people can plant other local species to help.

Helen Litchfield said people can plant primroses and red campions, which help insects and wildlife, and are beautiful and flower all year.

We must preserve our rare plants so we don't lose them.

People can help by removing non-native species like stinking onions and wild leek.

These species spread quickly and hurt native species and their homes.
