Canadians Enjoy Riding Personal Electric Vehicles at Night

Companies that rent personal electric vehicles have little information about group rides, but many people use them after work.

Josh Hunter leads night rides on personal electric vehicles in Edmonton and recently had a group of people with different types of vehicles like scooters, bicycles, and skateboards.

Personal electric vehicles are a cheap and environmentally friendly way to travel during the day, and they are also becoming a fun social activity at night.

Hunter's group, PEV Edmonton, starts its season in June, but some riders were already going on a nighttime tour of the city's river valley pathways and streets.

Anastasia Rewers-Kusiak from Bird said the company sees many riders from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on weekends.

Isaac Ransom from Neuron said about 20 to 25 percent of trips on their e-scooters and e-bicycles happen at night, and in some cities, many people use them for fun.

Ransom said some cities allow users to add friends to their account, so they can ride together, and many users want this feature.

Ransom said during the pandemic, many people rode e-scooters at night for fun.

Ransom said riding e-scooters with friends is a fun activity that many people enjoy.

Other cities like Ottawa, Vancouver, and Halifax also have groups that organize nighttime e-vehicle rides.

Kara Dejong said the group rides attract a lot of attention from people in cars and on the sidewalk.

Dejong said people are often smiling and taking pictures when they see the group ride.

Trevor Neufeld said he has been riding an e-scooter with PEV Edmonton for four years and has even ridden in the snow.

Neufeld said he loves riding and looks forward to it all week.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information said e-scooter injuries are increasing across the country.

There are different rules about where e-scooters can be ridden and how old you must be to rent one in different cities.

Lime said it emphasizes safe riding behavior, such as being visible and riding in bike lanes.

Neufeld said he wears protective gear like knee and shin pads when he rides.

Neufeld said he has only fallen off his e-scooter at low speeds and when doing something stupid.

Damon Spence said he is careful when riding and watches for traffic lights and stop signs.

Spence said he tries to go on e-scooter rides as much as possible during the summer.

Spence said it's a cheap activity that costs around $17 per hour.
