0:02hand harvesters don't live at home. They

0:09The Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Company

0:35>> My husband built a little shelf in here,

0:37so I can have a little stove. So, I

0:40guess my my cabin would be a little

0:42bougie.

0:44I always tell the campers, if you need

0:46anything, like come and see me, if it's

0:48sugar anything.

0:50>> There's no running water in the cabins.

0:53>> This is my little bowl for washing my

0:55hands.

0:56>> And there's no AC, so Stephanie brings

0:59her own.

1:00>> That's why we got the blanket door.

1:02Yeah, so the AC actually helps big time.

1:05Mine's probably the most like homey

1:07because I bring my grandsons with me,

1:10too.

1:10>> The campground has a communal kitchen,

1:12>> [music]

1:13>> when we do the potlucks on Thursday,

1:14yeah, everybody will be cooking.

1:16>> a dining hall,

1:18>> So, they had a birthday party in here

1:19last night.

1:21>> showers, [music] bathrooms, and a

1:23laundry room.

1:24>> At home, these people are more

1:25sheltered, and they use their devices,

1:27and they're on their TVs, and they don't

1:29visit each other anymore. Like, when I

1:30was little, everybody visited everybody.

1:33So, this reminds me of being little.

1:35It's like nostalgia.

1:36>> Despite the heat and the hard work, the

1:38community spirit of this camp draws

1:40people back season after season.

1:43>> Our relatives, Micmac relatives, they

1:45come every year, so we get to see people

1:47every year.

1:48>> And this is Priscilla and her family.

1:50They've been coming to the Barrens for

1:52over 30 years.

1:54This is MJ. How long have you been

1:55coming out here?

1:56>> Since I've been 2 years old.

1:59And I'm 45.

2:01>> Almost everyone in this camp is

2:02indigenous and berries have been vital

2:05to their tribes for millennia.

2:06>> We're earth people. Passamaquoddy,

2:09Eskasoni,

2:10Micmac, or Penobscot.

2:13We're all related like our languages

2:15will sound similar.

2:16>> All a big family. We don't know each

2:18other, you're still family.

2:20>> This way of life is dying out. Machines

2:23have largely replaced hand harvesters.

2:25>> [music]

2:25>> The Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Company

2:27once ran five of these campsites. Now

2:30it's down to two.

2:32>> I think someday this will be gone. Going

2:34to be replaced by machinery.

2:36>> Even though it's hot and sweaty and

2:38whatever, it's still it's [music] it's

2:40just a good time.

2:42>> It's everyone's heart.

2:44>> Basically, yeah.

2:45>> Mhm.

2:45>> Yeah. Doesn't matter what color or tribe

2:49or culture or anything.

2:50>> Mhm.

2:51>> Doesn't matter how you're shaped. Like

2:53me, I don't mind.
