Motability Warns Drivers of New Rules

Motability has made changes for some drivers.

Motability warns of a 'two week rule' that could make drivers lose cars. The service for disabled drivers has new technology for new drivers and those under 30.

Drivers must put black boxes in cars and download an app. Cars will have technology to monitor driving, including speed and braking.

Drivers with four bad reports in a year may lose their cars. A trial saw 300 cars removed. Two bad weeks in a row can also lead to removal.

Motability says: 'If a driver gets a bad report, they and the driver will get feedback. If they still drive badly, they may be removed.'

Motability will record location, speed, journey time, braking, and phone use while driving.

High usage can trigger a bad report, but there's no limit on journeys. High usage alone won't affect the lease.

The Drive Smart scheme won't affect leases if drivers are safe, no matter how many journeys they take.

Drive Smart is a device in the car windscreen with a phone app, not a tracker.

Motability said: 'The scheme helps disabled people. Drive Smart doesn't limit journeys, but industry data shows these factors can lead to accidents.'

High usage can trigger a bad report, but it won't affect the lease if it's the only reason. Drive Smart rewards safe driving.

Users get an email to register the device and must set it up within 10 days.

Motability recommends resting every hour and limiting trips to six daily. Going beyond this triggers a bad report, but won't affect the lease.

Motorists can travel 10,000 miles before paying extra. Previously, the limit was 20,000 miles.

Motability says most drivers travel 7,500 miles a year. A bad week is triggered by persistently bad driving, not a single incident.
