The Story of Asda's Name

Asda's name is over 60 years old.

Some brand names are easy to understand, but others are not.

M&S is short for Marks and Spencer, and KFC is short for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Asda is one of the biggest supermarket chains in the UK. It has over 1,100 stores, and many people shop there. But where did Asda's name come from? Asda is a big store with many items.

The family of Asda's founders had a butcher shop in West Yorkshire. In 1958, they went to the US and saw how useful it was to have many things under one roof.

A store called Piggly Wiggly was one of the first modern supermarkets. When the Asquiths returned, they opened a self-service store in West Yorkshire.

As the business grew, Peter Asquith made a deal with Associated Dairies. On May 3, 1965, they created the name Asda from Asquith and Dairies.
