Children embrace traditional Vietnamese music | Vietnam Today

0:04Tai Tu has long been at the heart of

0:06southern Vietnamese culture. And in

0:09order to preserve this traditional art

0:11from beyond the stage, many free classes

0:13have been made available to the

0:15community. And among the learners are

0:17children discovering a passion for the

0:19music at an early age.

0:31For the past six years, this Don Ca Tai

0:33Tu class has continued to welcome new

0:35students free of charge with support

0:38from the city of Can Tho. But keeping

0:40traditional music alive among such young

0:43children takes more than just funding.

0:45It is sustained by the dedication of

0:48veteran artists and often by the quiet

0:51encouragement of parents.

0:54This is a challenging art form both in

0:56technique and in attracting young

0:58learners in today's context. What

1:00concerns me most is the need for parents

1:03to be truly involved. In this class,

1:05parents are not just here to drop their

1:07children off. They stay, share the

1:10learning process, and support them along

1:12the way.

1:14When they attend, I usually sit with

1:16them so they feel more confident. Having

1:18me there encourages them to be bolder,

1:20to imitate and sing along with what

1:22teacher Hong teaches.

1:26I've been sitting in Miss Hong's class

1:28for about five years now. I attend two

1:30sessions a week on Mondays and Fridays,

1:33and I also practice at home. If I can, I

1:36hope to perform and sing on stage more

1:38often just like Miss Hong.

1:42The soul of Don Ca Tai Tu lies in

1:44improvisation and subtle variations in

1:47this melodic framework, which are shaped

1:49by the performer's emotion in the

1:51moment. This is also perhaps the most

1:54difficult element to pass on to young

1:56learners.

1:59I see the children as my own. Hearing

2:01them sing their first melodies brings me

2:03indescribable joy. As long as I have the

2:06strength and children still come with

2:08passion, I will continue to teach and

2:11stay with them.

2:15Humble classrooms like these are helping

2:20heritage to be preserved or a memory of

2:22past generations, but as something still

2:25present in today's world, continuously

2:28nurtured and passed on to those who come

2:30after.
