0:00It'd be the showdown of the century — but could the Mighty Adam really take on the Man of Steel?
0:05Dwayne Johnson faced an eight-year struggle to bring Black Adam to the big screen.
0:10Now, Johnson's patience and dedication has paid off.
0:12In its first four days at the box office, Black Adam brought in $67 million domestically,
0:18becoming the best opening-weekend performance of any movie with Johnson in the lead role.
0:23Notably, the character Johnson portrays, Black Adam, is one of the most powerful in DC Comics.
0:27Of course, the biggest buzz behind Black Adam is Superman's brief cameo at the very end
0:32of the movie.
0:33It's a match made in heaven — in the comic books, both characters possess superhuman
0:38strength, speed, hearing, healing, and stamina.
0:40But the movie's tease of a showdown between Supes and Mighty Adam has got fans wondering:
0:45who will ultimately win when these two juggernauts come to blows in the DCEU?
0:50"There's no one on this planet that can stop me."
0:52One critical difference between Superman and Black Adam in the comics is that Adam can
0:56discharge lightning bolts as projectiles while engaging his enemies in battle.
1:01It might not ever need to come to that, though, because Black Adam has an immediate edge over Kal-El.
1:06The Mighty Adam's most significant, unique advantage over the Last Son of Krypton is
1:11that he is immortal.
1:12Superman seems ageless, but Kal-El does grow older, albeit at a prolonged rate due to the
1:17sun's effect on his Kryptonian cells.
1:20It might take centuries, or even longer, but Clark Kent will eventually succumb to death
1:24from natural causes.
1:25If a brouhaha between these two super beings ever escalated into a fight, theoretically,
1:30Black Adam could just wait it out until Superman keels over from old age.
1:34Since a millennia-long wait does not make for very good storytelling, however, there
1:38must be a more immediate determination of a winner.
1:40For his part, Superman can put up one heck of a fight.
1:44His debut in Action Comics #1 back in 1938 saw Superman able to "leap 1/8th of a mile,"
1:50with skin that could be broken by "nothing less than a bursting shell."
1:53By contrast, the Superman of more recent days has been seen lifting quintillions of tons
1:58single-handed, flying so fast that time moves backward, and punching holes in the fabric
2:02of reality.
2:04Writers have gone back to the "Superman loses his powers" well so many times that it's become
2:08a full-blown trope, mostly because it's hard to write a high-stakes story when your hero
2:12can't be beaten.
2:13And that might just be where Black Adam comes into play.
2:16While everybody knows that Superman is vulnerable to kryptonite, he has another weakness that
2:20people often forget about: magic.
2:23In Superman #14, the Man of Steel was put under a trance by malevolent fish people.
2:29In Superman Vol. 2 #49, a piece of magical Kryptonite strips him of his powers.
2:34In Superman #171, he outright laments that his invulnerability can't protect him from
2:39a sorcerer's spell.
2:41This brings us to Black Adam.
2:42Adam has gone through his own growing pains over the years, but one aspect of his personality
2:46has remained solid: His powers are magical in nature.
2:50"Did he just catch a rocket?"
2:51"He caught a rocket."
2:52They were given to him by the same wizard who turned Billy Batson into the World's Mightiest
2:56Mortal, and they stem from the abilities of ancient gods — sometimes Greek, sometimes
3:00Egyptian, but always very, very powerful.
3:04If Black Adam plans on defeating Superman, he should travel to Smallville, Kansas, where
3:08Kal-El's vessel crash-landed on Earth — and where he may find Green K Kryptonite.
3:13Green K is among the most common and powerful iterations of Kryptonite because it can weaken
3:17and kill the Man of Steel with prolonged exposure.
3:20If the Mighty Adam wants to take out Superman once and for all, though, there's only one
3:24shade of Kryptonite he should bother searching for: Gold Kryptonite.
3:28The most formidable weapon Black Adam, or anyone else for that matter, could ever hope
3:32to wield against Kal-El, Gold Kryptonite will permanently strip Superman of all his powers.
3:37Black Adam will have to get up close and personal to use it, but Gold K is another potential
3:41way to victory.
3:42With all the advantages Black Adam has over the Man of Steel, the simple truth remains:
3:47Superman is stronger.
3:49If it comes down to physical combat, the Mighty Adam will fall.
3:52Even inferior, alternate versions of Superman have bested Black Adam in the comic books.
3:56In Shazam!
3:57Vol. 3 #14, the evil Superboy-Prime easily defeats not only Black Adam but all the Marvels
4:03on his own.
4:04And that was the second time Superboy-Prime bested the Mighty Adam — he also made quick
4:08work of him during the Infinite Crisis crossover event.
4:11Ultraman, Kal-El's alternate, darker half from Earth-3, ended his fisticuffs with Black
4:16Adam by breaking his jaw in Forever Evil #3.
4:19And don't think Superman will have any problem dealing out punishment against his new foe.
4:23Kal-El has abandoned his morality on multiple occasions to do what is necessary to save
4:28the world and those he loves.
4:30An alternate-reality Kal-El slaughtered Wonder Woman in 2004's Superman/Batman: Absolute
4:35Power, and the Man of Steel wiped out the Joker, Black Canary, Green Arrow, and even
4:39Shazam in the far-reaching Injustice saga.
4:42Finally, in Man of Steel, the first official installment of the DCEU's big-screen adventures,
4:47Superman is forced to break General Zod's neck to save a group of civilians.
4:51Bottom line: Superman is not above killing.
4:54Although Dwayne Johnson put in a lot of work to get Henry Cavill back in the game, the
4:58answer to this question is simple: Given the right conditions, Black Adam would best Superman
5:03in a fight.
5:04Funnily enough, however, Johnson doesn't necessarily agree.
5:07In an interview with Jake's Takes, he said:
5:09"We will create Black Adam for him to be the most powerful and unstoppable force on this planet.
5:14The most powerful and unstoppable force in the entire universe has been on the sidelines
5:18for too long."
5:19So what's going to happen when Superman and Black Adam finally get their showdown?
5:23Looks like we'll just have to wait to find out.
