-It's always great to see you. -Thank you, I appreciate that.
0:02
It's always good to see you, as well.
0:04
Congrats again. Yeah.
0:05
It's Justin Hartley in the house.
0:06
[ Cheers and applause ]
0:08
-Thank you.
0:09
-Congrats on "Tracker." It's a big hit.
0:12
-Thanks, yeah. -That's fantastic.
0:13
I saw your beautiful wife backstage.
0:16
I was going to ask you, what are you doing for Mother's Day?
0:18
Anything...? -We -- Well, so, look.
0:21
Mother's Day -- I work a lot,
0:23
so a lot of times I'm not around my mother for Mother's Day.
0:26
But when I am around her, she's sort of like, um --
0:30
How do I explain -- She's a very smart woman,
0:32
very beautiful woman, very regal, very, um,
0:35
knowledgeable and just -- just a treat.
0:37
Just everybody loves -- She walks into a room,
0:39
and everybody just loves Jackie, right?
0:42
She's also a bit of a clown. -Okay.
0:44
-And so I got time to spend with her.
0:46
We were in -- we were in Beverly Hills, we were shopping.
0:48
My wife and I were shopping.
0:50
And I noticed that there's some paparazzi
0:52
that are taking photos of us, which is fine.
0:53
They're doing their own thing, and they're out of the way.
0:55
But I lean back to my mother, and I say, "Hey,
0:57
just so you know, I like to give you a little heads-up,
0:59
like, there's photographs being taken, so whatever."
1:02
And so she decides to do this whole photobombing thing
1:05
with me, and it's unbelievable.
1:07
I think I brought -- Yeah, it's outrageous.
1:09
This woman is like --
1:10
-Here's you guys. -Not joking around there.
1:12
There we are, trying to be cool
1:13
and, like, hang out and do our thing.
1:14
And there's my mother.
1:15
[ Laughter ]
1:18
-Dude, she's like -- she's doing faces and doing bits?
1:20
-She's doing faces.
1:21
So the funny -- the funny thing is,
1:23
is she's really getting a kick out of it.
1:24
My daughter's next to her, and she's really --
1:26
just really getting a kick out of razzing me.
1:28
So the next day, I see this photo.
1:30
And so I send it to her, and I go, "Look at this,"
1:32
and she goes, "Oh, it's a good thing
1:34
they don't publish those things."
1:35
And I go, "Where the -- where the hell do you think
1:37
I found the photo, mother?" [ Laughter ]
1:39
She was mortified and devastated.
1:41
Devastated. But there's another picture
1:43
of her really getting a kick out of her, uh...
1:45
Out of her -- Yeah.
1:47
Now that's what she really looks.
1:48
-Yeah. She's gorgeous. She's gorgeous.
1:49
Come on, Mom. We love you, Mom.
1:51
-You see how happy she is about razzing me like that.
1:54
-The best. -Yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:56
-We love you, Mom.
1:57
-We love you. Happy Mother's Day.
1:58
I saw that you're about to do a college commencement speech.
2:01
-I am. -Have you done this before?
2:04
-No. -Okay. All right.
2:06
-Well, the deal with this whole thing,
2:08
Jimmy, is that people were like --
2:10
That's like the fifth time someone's asked me,
2:11
"Have you done this before?"
2:12
And then they look at me like that,
2:14
like, "What have you got yourself into?" kind of.
2:16
Yeah. -Yeah.
2:17
-And I'm like, starting to get really nervous about it now.
2:18
I wasn't nervous before. I was fine.
2:20
I was like, "No, it's great. It's gonna be a lot of fun."
2:21
I can't wait. These kids accomplished something.
2:23
It's going to be amazing. Four years out of school,
2:25
or five, depending on how long it takes you, whatever.
2:27
And, um -- six, whatever. -Yeah, yeah, yeah.
2:29
-Let's go. Let's be real.
2:31
-Or you drop out, whatever. -Drop out, whatever it takes.
2:33
I don't know. You and I are sitting here.
2:34
-Yeah. No, exactly.
2:36
-But now I'm starting to get a little nervous about it
2:37
because it's a lot of pressure. Right?
2:39
And I'm wondering, like, what I got myself into.
2:41
-No, you're gonna be fantastic. -I hope so.
2:42
-They're gonna love you. -I hope so, I hope so.
2:44
-Your daughter's graduating college.
2:45
-She's graduating, yeah. She's graduating in
2:47
a couple of -- couple of months. Yeah.
2:48
-Congratulations. That's wild.
2:49
-It's exciting. She's, uh -- [ Cheers and applause ]
2:51
Yeah, she does really -- She does really well in school.
2:54
She does better -- better than her father did in school.
2:56
Let me put it that way, yeah. -Yeah.
2:58
Did you know what you wanted to do when you were in college?
3:01
-Um, no, I -- you know what? I had this really weird idea
3:04
that I was gonna be -- Not weird,
3:06
but I thought I would be a teacher.
3:07
My mom's a teacher, so I thought,
3:08
"Well, I'll just go into teaching."
3:10
-Great. -Yeah, that's great
3:11
and wonderful, but then I also had this sort of weird idea
3:13
that I was gonna be a kind of a -- like, a coach,
3:16
a professional coach of, like, basketball or
3:19
baseball or football.
3:21
I didn't have a sport picked out.
3:22
I just thought, "That'd be cool to be a --
3:24
Like, Bill Cowher's got a great job."
3:26
You know what I mean? I thought I would do that.
3:28
Just such a fool. -Wow.
3:29
-Really, yeah. -So did you start to go to...
3:32
-No, I didn't do anything. Just -- And I did nothing.
3:34
I ended up doing -- I ended up doing this --
3:36
this class in college. It was called, uh,
3:40
Oral Interpretation of Children's Literature.
3:42
And I thought, "This is a blow-off class.
3:44
It's gonna be easy nursery rhymes and things like that."
3:45
-In college. -In college, yeah.
3:47
I thought, "This is the simplest thing in the world."
3:48
-Yeah. -Hickory dickory dock,
3:49
all this kind of stuff. Whatever. Easy A.
3:51
-Yeah. -And you get in there,
3:52
and you start to realize these people who wrote
3:53
these nursery rhymes are, like, dropping acid
3:55
or something's going on. It doesn't make any sense.
3:57
And you got to interpret all this stuff.
3:59
And it was an acting class. So you have to get up
4:02
and perform these nursery rhymes and things like that.
4:04
I end up getting this acting bug.
4:06
I ended up -- I was horrified, completely horrified.
4:09
-Yeah. -And then I just
4:10
ended up loving it. I got cast in a play,
4:12
and I thought, "Well, this is the greatest thing in the world.
4:14
I got to try to do this for the rest of my life.
4:15
-There you go. And it turned out okay.
4:17
-So far so good.
4:18
-You don't have to coach or anything.
4:19
-I don't have to coach anybody. Yeah.
4:21
Was your first gig on "Passions"?
4:25
-My first gig was on "Passions."
4:27
-"Passions" was great. Nice. -It was -- it was a trip.
4:29
It was a trip. And so I got --
4:31
So I got this gig by the skin of my teeth.
4:33
Barely got it.
4:34
And I ended up showing up.
4:36
And I'm working with this actor, Ben Masters --
4:38
late, great Ben Masters -- really talented actor,
4:40
theater actor, New York actor, really great, great guy.
4:44
And he has this three-page monologue.
4:46
I show up -- He's my dad in the show.
4:48
And my line is, "Hello, Father." Makes sense, right?
4:52
Easy enough. I got lost in the monologue.
4:55
He did this three-page monologue.
4:56
This is like day one.
4:58
He does this three-page monologue.
4:59
I'm just working his tail off, right?
5:01
He turns around, looks at me,
5:03
and I'm just mesmerized by this guy's acting.
5:05
I didn't say a word. -Didn't say, "Hello, Father?"
5:07
-I ruined the -- No, I didn't say anything.
5:09
I ruined his entire monologue.
5:11
So that was how I introduced myself to, uh, to acting.
5:13
-How many times did he have to do the monologue?
5:14
-Well, he had to do it again. [ Laughter ]
5:17
-Yeah, he wasn't -- he wasn't too happy about that.
5:19
-Yeah, but everything worked out okay.
5:21
Here we are, season three of "Tracker."
5:23
You're crushing it, buddy. It's so good.
5:25
[ Cheers and applause ]
5:27
It's well-written. The stunts are good.
5:30
-Yeah. -Are you getting better
5:31
and better at doing stunts?
5:34
-You know, I try to do --
5:36
I try to do all of my own stunts,
5:38
and I say this in this way, on camera.
5:40
So in other words, when you see them,
5:42
I like for the audience to see that it's me doing them,
5:45
which basically means that I have a stunt team
5:46
that does those stunts a hundred times
5:48
before I'm allowed to do it at all.
5:49
So, it's not like I'm doing everything.
5:51
They're doing all the heavy lifting.
5:52
But when you watch the show, I like to do my own stunts.
5:54
There are certain things they don't let you do.
5:56
They're just too dangerous.
5:57
You're not -- you know, I'm not getting in car crashes.
5:59
I'm not lighting myself on fire. I'm not, you know --
6:01
I get hurt doing the fake fighting, so it's like...
6:04
-Yeah, that's usually like that.
6:05
-I see a fake fight coming up, and I'm like, "Oh, man,
6:07
I got to stretch out the neck." -Oh, you're so good at it.
6:09
-Yeah, thanks. -And there's a lot of great --
6:10
the cast is great, as well,
6:13
surrounding you. The special guest stars.
6:15
Is there any one -- any dream guest stars
6:17
you'd like to have on?
6:19
-I mean, look. Well, I'm back here.
6:20
This reminds me, I did a show here for a while
6:22
called "This Is Us."
6:24
I wouldn't mind having those guys on.
6:25
[ Cheers and applause ] They're busy.
6:27
They're all very -- they're all very, very busy.
6:28
But, um -- but, yeah, I mean, I think such a diverse cast,
6:31
and they can all do a bunch of different things.
6:33
-That would be so fun. -Yeah.
6:34
They wouldn't come back, like, as my family
6:36
or anything necessarily, but it would be cool
6:37
to have them back on. -That's when I first met you.
6:39
-Yeah. -So I'm happy.
6:41
I'm thankful for that show. -Me too, me too.
6:42
-Do people still come up to you and say, "I love that show"?
6:44
-"This Is Us"? Yeah. They do.
6:46
And it's more than just a show, even.
6:48
It's like -- It's unbelievable.
6:49
Just the other day, I had a woman walk up to me
6:51
and tell me a story about her --
6:53
Her mother had passed away.
6:54
Um, if you're watching, that was a lovely story.
6:58
Um, her mother had passed away a year and a half ago.
7:00
She said she had a really tough time getting over it,
7:02
and the show actually helped put her in a better place.
7:06
And she looked me square in the eye --
7:07
It was so touching.
7:08
She didn't have to come up to me.
7:09
She didn't have to say any of that.
7:10
-It affects people.
7:11
-It affects people in a very big way.
7:12
And it's incredible, and we get the same thing,
7:14
believe it or not, with "Tracker,"
7:15
where it's, like, multigenerational.
7:17
People will watch it with their dads, with their kids.
7:18
It's awesome.
7:20
It's like the greatest feeling in the world.
7:22
-Yeah. Come on. You're great at it.
7:24
I want to show a clip. Here's Justin Hartley
7:26
in season three of "Tracker." Take a look.
7:29
-Looking for a missing girl, Amelia Corbett.
7:32
She's supposed to meet her friend Jesse,
7:34
whose roommate was killed. Now they're on the run.
7:37
-And you... you think they came here?
7:39
-Well, I don't know if they came here.
7:41
The car they were in was here.
7:42
-Well, I haven't seen them. Maybe the owner knows something.
7:45
I was just getting started with him when you interrupted.
7:47
-Sorry about that.
7:49
How do you want to do this?
7:50
-Let's just take it one step at a time.
7:53
I did get here first, so...dibs.
7:55
-Yeah, no, I won't get in your way.
7:56
I'll just stand back, watch you do your thing.
7:59
[ Cheers and applause ] -Come on.
8:01
Justin Hartley, everybody.
8:02
New episodes of "Tracker" premiere Sundays at 9:00 p.m.
8:06
on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
8:09
Justin and I are doing something fun after the break.
8:11
Stick around. Come on back.
