0:00So the other day I was having
0:01a conversation with
0:03an older person who used
0:05the English phrase well to do.
0:07They said that their cousin
0:09was well to do, and I hadn't
0:11heard that phrase for a while.
0:12And it simply means that
0:13their cousin is rich.
0:15In English, when you say
0:17someone is well to do, it means
0:19they have lots of money.
0:21So in this English lesson,
0:23I thought I should teach
0:23you seven more phrases.
0:25Seven.
0:25Seven more vocabulary words
0:27and phrases that we use when we
0:29talk about people who are wealthy
0:31people who are rich. People
0:33not like me.
0:34I still have a mortgage and a car
0:36loan, and I have to work
0:37every day to pay the bills.
0:39But some people in this
0:40world have lots of money.
0:42Some people are well to do.
0:43And in this English lesson, I'll
0:45teach you a whole bunch of words
0:46you can use to talk about them.
0:48This next phrase is kind
0:49of similar, and it's
0:50the phrase well off.
0:52When you say someone is well off,
0:53it means they have lots of money.
0:56I'm not sure exactly what
0:58the origin of these phrases are.
1:00If you say someone is well to do
1:02or well off, it doesn't sound like
1:04a phrase you would use
1:06to say they have lots of money.
1:07But if I was to say my brother is
1:10well off or my cousin is well off,
1:12it means they have lots of money.
1:15It means they don't have
1:16to even go to work every day,
1:18probably, they just have lots
1:19of money and they can
1:20buy whatever they want,
1:21whenever they want.
1:23So if you say someone is well
1:24off, once again, it means
1:26they have lots of money.
1:28So I know sometimes you guys want
1:29to know the common way to say
1:31things, the way that people say
1:33it in everyday English, if I was
1:35to describe someone as rich, I
1:37would probably say they're
1:38loaded.
1:39Again, in English, if you say
1:41someone's loaded, it simply
1:42means they have lots of money.
1:45If someone opened their wallet
1:46and they had all kinds of $100
1:49bills in their wallet, if
1:50they had thousands of dollars
1:51in their wallet, I would
1:52think, oh, that guy is loaded.
1:55That guy must be
1:56really, really rich.
1:57So in everyday English, that's
2:00probably the word I would use to
2:01describe someone who is wealthy.
2:03Wow, she's loaded.
2:04Or wow, he's loaded,
2:06he has lots of money.
2:08The next phrase is a really
2:10long phrase, and it's the phrase
2:12doing well for themselves.
2:14When you say someone is doing
2:15well for themselves, it
2:16means they have lots of money.
2:18If I saw a guy driving
2:20a Lamborghini, I would think
2:22to myself, wow, he's doing
2:23really well for himself.
2:25This could mean that they're rich.
2:27It could also mean that they
2:29have a job that pays lots
2:30of money, and therefore they're
2:32probably quite wealthy as well.
2:34But if I see someone with something
2:36really nice, like a really fancy
2:38sports car or a gigantic house so
2:41big that I would call it a
2:42mansion, I would say, wow, that
2:44person must be doing really well
2:46for themselves.
2:47They must have a lot of money.
2:48And they must also be earning
2:50a lot of money,
2:51doing really well for themselves.
2:54This next phrase that you would use
2:56to talk about someone who
2:57is rich is even bigger, it's even
2:59longer than the last one.
3:01And it's the phrase, more money
3:03than they know what to do with.
3:05More money than they
3:07know what to do with.
3:08I should make some room
3:09so I can put that above my head.
3:11More money than they
3:12know what to do with.
3:14This is a phrase we use to jokingly
3:16talk about someone who is wealthy.
3:19This is a phrase where when we just
3:21wanna say it in a funny way, we
3:23might say this, wow, John just won
3:25the lottery and now he has more
3:28money than he knows what to do
3:30with.
3:31Basically what we're saying
3:32is that they could buy
3:34everything they want to buy.
3:36They could pay off all their
3:37debt and then still have money.
3:39Still have all kinds of money
3:41in the bank, and they
3:42would have more money
3:43than they know what to do with.
3:46So you can't see it right now,
3:47but over there by the picnic
3:49table, we also have our fire
3:51pit where we sometimes have
3:52campfires in the summer.
3:54And this reminds me
3:55of the phrase money to burn.
3:57When someone is really wealthy,
3:59when they're really rich, we might
4:00say they have money to burn.
4:02They are so rich that if they
4:04burnt money and that money turned
4:06to ash, they wouldn't
4:07even notice because they have
4:09so much money in the bank.
4:11So over there, I'm not sure if
4:13you can see the picnic table.
4:14It's kind of covered in snow
4:15today, but a little bit
4:17past that is our fire pit.
4:18We do not burn money
4:20in our fire pit.
4:21I do not have money to burn.
4:23But I'm sure there are some people
4:25in the world that are so
4:26wealthy they have money to burn.
4:29I don't think they
4:30actually burn the money.
4:31I think it's just a saying
4:32that you can imagine that they
4:34might do something like that.
4:36I can't think of anyone who would
4:37actually burn money that would
4:39just be a little bit silly.
4:41Another kind of funny phrase
4:43that we use to talk about
4:44wealthy people or rich people
4:46is the phrase filthy rich.
4:48Now, when you're filthy, it
4:50means that you're dirty.
4:51Like if you play in the mud,
4:52you'll get filthy, you'll
4:53have mud on your hands.
4:55But sometimes when we talk
4:57about rich people, we
4:58say they're filthy rich.
4:59I'm not sure what the origin
5:01of this phrase is either.
5:03I'm not sure what being filthy has
5:05to do with having lots of money.
5:07But you might hear this on tv,
5:09you might hear this in a movie.
5:10You might hear them say, oh,
5:12that guy is filthy rich, or that
5:14lady is filthy rich, meaning
5:17they just have so much money,
5:18I guess they're covered in money.
5:20I'm not sure why we use this
5:22phrase, but we do often say
5:24that someone is filthy rich.
5:27My microphone was black when I came
5:29out, but now it's covered in snow.
5:32I'll have to dry it out
5:33when I get back inside.
5:34By the way, I do actually like
5:35making English lessons outside.
5:38Anyways, last phrase about
5:39rich people is the phrase
5:41to be made of money.
5:43Basically, if you know someone
5:45who sits in the front row
5:47at a sporting event or
5:48someone who drives a really
5:49fancy car, you might say,
5:51wow, they are made of money.
5:53I should clean my lens
5:54here a little bit.
5:55I see snowflakes landing on it
5:58as I make this video.
5:59So there you go.
6:00A few phrases you can use to talk
6:03about rich people in English.
6:05And once again, I am
6:06not a rich person.
6:07But I did hear someone use
6:09the phrase well to do and then
6:11that created a whole
6:12English lesson for you.
6:14Anyways, thanks for watching.
