Now, as global tourism moves towards
0:02
sustainability, Vietnam is embracing a
0:04
new low-carbon tourism models that
0:07
balance development with environmental
0:09
protection. Yes, and in Lang Son
0:11
province,
0:12
Lung Nom village is emerging as one of
0:15
the country's first community-based
0:17
net-zero tourism destinations. Our
0:19
reporter Duc Lam has more from the
0:21
UNESCO Lang Son Global Geopark.
0:26
It may look like an ordinary mountain
0:29
village, but in Lung Nom, there are no
0:31
engine sounds, only the sounds of nature
0:35
and daily village life.
0:37
What makes Lung Nom different isn't
0:39
what's been built, but what hasn't. No
0:41
concrete, no heavy construction, just
0:43
[music] our traditional Nung houses
0:45
adapted for modern traveler. And tourism
0:48
here is being reshaped from
0:50
solar-powered energy to low-impact
0:52
design. This is what [music] a no-carbon
0:55
footprint journey begins to look like.
0:58
Since late 2025, the village has
1:01
gradually introduced solar power systems
1:04
designed to suit the mountainous terrain
1:06
and local needs. For residents, access
1:09
to clean energy is not only improving
1:11
daily life, but also opening new
1:14
opportunities for sustainable community
1:16
tourism.
1:17
The Lung Nom people made it go Since
1:19
last year, we have used a solar energy
1:21
for lighting. We also use water from the
1:24
mountain stream, so life here remains
1:26
simple, clean, and closely connected to
1:29
nature.
1:31
Lung Nom is also promoting [music] a
1:33
farm-to-table tourism model. Visitors
1:36
can harvest organic vegetables with
1:38
local residents and learn how organic
1:41
waste is reused as natural fertilizer in
1:44
daily farming activities. [music]
1:48
And they have organic plum.
1:51
They you can pick some herb and they're
1:53
preparing cakes, so they They a lot to
1:55
give. Any traveler that look for
1:57
authenticity
1:59
and deep connection,
2:02
I will be super happy to make them
2:03
discover this village because there is
2:06
something here.
2:08
Where else Recognizing the village
2:10
tourism potential, local authorities
2:12
have identified community-based and
2:14
ecotourism as strategic priorities for
2:17
the province.
2:19
Lang Son sees community-based and
2:21
ecotourism as key strengths. The
2:24
province has introduced policies to
2:26
promote the value of the UNESCO Global
2:28
Geopark while supporting local
2:30
communities in landscape improvement.
2:35
Beyond Lang Son, other parts [music] of
2:37
Vietnam are also exploring net zero
2:39
tourism. Together, these models are
2:42
shaping a broader picture of Vietnam's
2:44
potential for net zero tourism where
2:47
sustainable development goes hand in
2:49
hand with preserving nature, culture,
2:52
and local livelihoods.
2:56
>> [music]
2:59
>> Well, clearly those are some very
3:01
interesting models that we've just seen
3:02
of net zero tourism emerging
3:05
[clears throat] across Vietnam. And what
3:07
stands out is that many local
3:08
communities are finding ways to preserve
3:11
nature and cultural identity while still
3:14
creating sustainable livelihoods through
3:16
tourism. Yes, that's right,
3:18
and [snorts] as demand for greener and
3:21
more responsible travel continues to
3:23
grow globally, net zero tourism could
3:25
become a major opportunity for Vietnam's
3:28
tourism industry in the years to come.
3:30
And to gain a better understanding of
3:32
Vietnam's path towards more sustainable
3:34
travel, we are joined by Mr. Michael
3:37
Angel, founder of MQL Sustainable
3:40
Tourism Services.
3:42
Thank you so much for joining us.
3:44
So, as Vietnam promotes greener and more
3:47
sustainable travel, some provinces are
3:49
already piloting low-carbon tourism
3:52
models. So, in the global tourism
3:55
industry, how important are these local
3:57
initiatives and can small
3:59
community-based models generate
4:01
long-term economic value?
4:06
Well, it is very interesting cuz
4:10
in Vietnam
4:12
during these recent years is happening
4:15
what happened in other destinations
4:17
before. Reducing the CO2 and achieving
4:20
this net zero is very important
4:23
to [music] the whole country of Vietnam.
4:26
Because our government, they make
4:28
already some commitments looking at 2030
4:32
up to 2050
4:34
to achieve
4:35
a net zero pollution on CO2.
4:38
So, this is not an individual effort, if
4:41
not all the airlines, all the
4:43
construction and real estate developers
4:47
need to go aligned
4:48
with tourism, with trains, with
4:51
transportation.
4:52
Everybody must be aligned looking at the
4:54
same direction.
4:56
Yes, Miquel, and net zero tourism is
4:58
sometimes mistakenly equated with less
5:01
development involving fewer facilities
5:04
and lower profits. So, from your
5:06
perspective, how should people correctly
5:08
understand the concept of net zero
5:10
tourism, especially in a developing
5:12
country like Vietnam?
5:17
Right. You you are right. This is one of
5:19
the common misconceptions.
5:22
Uh net zero tourism and net zero
5:24
properties that we are supporting, they
5:27
don't need to be lower categories or
5:30
lower services or lower standards in any
5:34
way. This CO2 emissions is not related
5:38
to cut services or minimize any of the
5:42
facilities.
5:44
I would say the opposite. The only thing
5:46
is that we measure what we are doing.
5:49
And so I think this is a clear
5:51
clear message for all your your viewers
5:54
in your program.
5:57
Yes, Miguel. Last question. So, looking
5:59
ahead, what should Vietnam prioritize
6:01
now if it wants to establish itself as a
6:03
leading net zero tourism destinations in
6:05
the region, not just in policy, but in
6:08
practice?
6:10
One simple measure that will help a lot
6:14
will be to have a law
6:17
enforcing that all the hotels, all the
6:20
resorts, all the travel companies, all
6:22
the transportation companies, airlines,
6:24
all the tourism stakeholders
6:27
are accountable for what they produce to
6:31
the atmosphere, to the Vietnamese air.
6:34
We can talk about electricity, about
6:36
solar panels, about electric vehicles
6:39
instead of fuel. All these help us to
6:43
reduce the CO2 that we're bringing to
6:45
the atmosphere. But,
6:47
the point here in Vietnam, especially
6:50
for developing countries like Vietnam,
6:52
is that many owners and many companies
6:55
do not know how to measure
6:57
these CO2 emissions.
7:00
And how to reduce something that we
7:02
don't know how to measure. If we pollute
7:04
a lot, we do have measures for you to
7:06
reduce
7:08
and pollute less.
7:09
And if you pollute less, we have
7:11
measures for you to pollute zero.
7:14
Only this way is the one who will drive
7:17
us to achieve
7:19
the 2050 commitments.
7:22
Yeah, thank you very much for your time.
