Game of Thrones star transforms for BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens classic

A Game of Thrones and Industry actor has been transformed in first look images from his new BBC drama.

Kit Harington is starring in an upcoming four-part drama adaptation of author Charles Dickens’ literary classic A Tale of Two Cities, playing a "brilliant but erratic" lawyer who gets caught up in a "powerful and complex love triangle".

Images have now been released showing him in character along with his co-stars Francois Civil and Mirren Mack, with the trio dressed in period attire.

The drama is based on Dickens' book, which was published in 1859 and set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution.

The action will be set in London in 1782, with tensions running high amid the war.

Lucie Manette (who is played by Miss Austen actress Mirren) has her life upended when she receives a message from Paris - her father, who has been assumed dead for almost 20 years, may actually still be alive.

However, the messenger - idealistic French emigré Charles Darnay (who is played by Beating Hearts' Francois) - ends up being arrested and is charged with treason.

A BBC synopsis says: "Lucie enlists the help of a brilliant but erratic young lawyer, Sydney Carton (Kit), to free Darnay in the hope he will lead her to Paris to track down her father.

"Lucie’s collision with Darnay and Carton unleashes a powerful and complex love triangle. Both men fight to be worthy of her love, and Lucie is torn over which one to choose."

"Yet neither man - physically so alike, spiritually poles apart - can escape the other," it goes on. "Instead, they find themselves bound together in life and death, through triumphs, tragedies, marriage, and murder."

Kit is best known to TV audiences for starring as Jon Snow in fantasy hit Game of Thrones, a role he held from 2011 to 2019 and which propelled him to fame.

The actor has more recently been seen in popular financial thriller drama Industry, playing Sir Henry Muck, who is the spoiled and troubled CEO of a green energy start-up.

A Tale of Two Cities is set to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK and MGM+ in the US.
