According to Gero, sperm whales communicate with each other using patterns of clicks, similar to a Morse code system.

The clicks and pauses changed during the birth, with the whales going from being relatively quiet to all communicating at the same time.

The noises may have played a role in aiding communication and helping the animals synchronize their efforts during the birthing process.

Gero also suggested that the whales may have been celebrating the birth, similar to how humans do.
