0:02sustainability, Vietnam is embracing a

0:04new low-carbon tourism models that

0:07balance development with environmental

0:09protection. Yes, and in Lang Son

0:12Lung Nom village is emerging as one of

0:15the country's first community-based

0:17net-zero tourism destinations. Our

0:19reporter Duc Lam has more from the

0:21UNESCO Lang Son Global Geopark.

0:26It may look like an ordinary mountain

0:29village, but in Lung Nom, there are no

0:31engine sounds, only the sounds of nature

0:35and daily village life.

0:37What makes Lung Nom different isn't

0:39what's been built, but what hasn't. No

0:41concrete, no heavy construction, just

0:43[music] our traditional Nung houses

0:45adapted for modern traveler. And tourism

0:48here is being reshaped from

0:50solar-powered energy to low-impact

0:52design. This is what [music] a no-carbon

0:55footprint journey begins to look like.

0:58Since late 2025, the village has

1:01gradually introduced solar power systems

1:04designed to suit the mountainous terrain

1:06and local needs. For residents, access

1:09to clean energy is not only improving

1:11daily life, but also opening new

1:14opportunities for sustainable community

1:16tourism.

1:17The Lung Nom people made it go Since

1:19last year, we have used a solar energy

1:21for lighting. We also use water from the

1:24mountain stream, so life here remains

1:26simple, clean, and closely connected to

1:29nature.

1:31Lung Nom is also promoting [music] a

1:33farm-to-table tourism model. Visitors

1:36can harvest organic vegetables with

1:38local residents and learn how organic

1:41waste is reused as natural fertilizer in

1:44daily farming activities. [music]

1:48And they have organic plum.

1:51They you can pick some herb and they're

1:53preparing cakes, so they They a lot to

1:55give. Any traveler that look for

1:57authenticity

1:59and deep connection,

2:02I will be super happy to make them

2:03discover this village because there is

2:06something here.

2:08Where else Recognizing the village

2:10tourism potential, local authorities

2:12have identified community-based and

2:14ecotourism as strategic priorities for

2:17the province.

2:19Lang Son sees community-based and

2:21ecotourism as key strengths. The

2:24province has introduced policies to

2:26promote the value of the UNESCO Global

2:28Geopark while supporting local

2:30communities in landscape improvement.

2:35Beyond Lang Son, other parts [music] of

2:37Vietnam are also exploring net zero

2:39tourism. Together, these models are

2:42shaping a broader picture of Vietnam's

2:44potential for net zero tourism where

2:47sustainable development goes hand in

2:49hand with preserving nature, culture,

2:52and local livelihoods.

2:59>> Well, clearly those are some very

3:01interesting models that we've just seen

3:02of net zero tourism emerging

3:05[clears throat] across Vietnam. And what

3:07stands out is that many local

3:08communities are finding ways to preserve

3:11nature and cultural identity while still

3:14creating sustainable livelihoods through

3:16tourism. Yes, that's right,

3:18and [snorts] as demand for greener and

3:21more responsible travel continues to

3:23grow globally, net zero tourism could

3:25become a major opportunity for Vietnam's

3:28tourism industry in the years to come.

3:30And to gain a better understanding of

3:32Vietnam's path towards more sustainable

3:34travel, we are joined by Mr. Michael

3:37Angel, founder of MQL Sustainable

3:40Tourism Services.

3:42Thank you so much for joining us.

3:44So, as Vietnam promotes greener and more

3:47sustainable travel, some provinces are

3:49already piloting low-carbon tourism

3:52models. So, in the global tourism

3:55industry, how important are these local

3:57initiatives and can small

3:59community-based models generate

4:01long-term economic value?

4:06Well, it is very interesting cuz

4:10in Vietnam

4:12during these recent years is happening

4:15what happened in other destinations

4:17before. Reducing the CO2 and achieving

4:20this net zero is very important

4:23to [music] the whole country of Vietnam.

4:26Because our government, they make

4:28already some commitments looking at 2030

4:32up to 2050

4:34to achieve

4:35a net zero pollution on CO2.

4:38So, this is not an individual effort, if

4:41not all the airlines, all the

4:43construction and real estate developers

4:47need to go aligned

4:48with tourism, with trains, with

4:51transportation.

4:52Everybody must be aligned looking at the

4:54same direction.

4:56Yes, Miquel, and net zero tourism is

4:58sometimes mistakenly equated with less

5:01development involving fewer facilities

5:04and lower profits. So, from your

5:06perspective, how should people correctly

5:08understand the concept of net zero

5:10tourism, especially in a developing

5:12country like Vietnam?

5:17Right. You you are right. This is one of

5:19the common misconceptions.

5:22Uh net zero tourism and net zero

5:24properties that we are supporting, they

5:27don't need to be lower categories or

5:30lower services or lower standards in any

5:34way. This CO2 emissions is not related

5:38to cut services or minimize any of the

5:42facilities.

5:44I would say the opposite. The only thing

5:46is that we measure what we are doing.

5:49And so I think this is a clear

5:51clear message for all your your viewers

5:54in your program.

5:57Yes, Miguel. Last question. So, looking

5:59ahead, what should Vietnam prioritize

6:01now if it wants to establish itself as a

6:03leading net zero tourism destinations in

6:05the region, not just in policy, but in

6:08practice?

6:10One simple measure that will help a lot

6:14will be to have a law

6:17enforcing that all the hotels, all the

6:20resorts, all the travel companies, all

6:22the transportation companies, airlines,

6:24all the tourism stakeholders

6:27are accountable for what they produce to

6:31the atmosphere, to the Vietnamese air.

6:34We can talk about electricity, about

6:36solar panels, about electric vehicles

6:39instead of fuel. All these help us to

6:43reduce the CO2 that we're bringing to

6:45the atmosphere. But,

6:47the point here in Vietnam, especially

6:50for developing countries like Vietnam,

6:52is that many owners and many companies

6:55do not know how to measure

6:57these CO2 emissions.

7:00And how to reduce something that we

7:02don't know how to measure. If we pollute

7:04a lot, we do have measures for you to

7:06reduce

7:08and pollute less.

7:09And if you pollute less, we have

7:11measures for you to pollute zero.

7:14Only this way is the one who will drive

7:17us to achieve

7:19the 2050 commitments.
