0:16as a fact. I'd like for this talk to be

0:19a conversation starter." Predictions

0:21invite manipulation. Their power to

0:24shape the future creates the temptation

0:26to tamper with it and benefit from it.

0:29We're facing some pretty grim

0:30predictions from some of our most

0:32prominent profits. Larry Ellison, the

0:34chairman of a predictive software

0:36company appropriately named Oracle,

0:39has predicted a modern surveillance

0:41state in which citizens will be on their

0:44best behavior because we're being

0:45watched all the time. But the illusion

0:47of a world without crime is a world

0:51filled with a very different kind of

0:53crime, authoritarianism. What can we do

0:56to not sleepwalk into it? Plenty

0:59profits gain their power from people

1:02believing them. If we decide to defy

1:04this prediction instead of obeying it,

1:07we will choose products that are more

1:08respectful of privacy. For starters,

1:11first predictions are never facts. They

1:14are speech acts. Second, they invite

1:17manipulation.

1:18Third, they create and cover up

1:21injustice. Predictions can be weapons of

1:24power, but they only work if we believe
