New method brings martyrs home | Vietnam Today

0:46the outcome of a new search method based

0:49on the memories of American veterans who

0:51fought in the war in Vietnam. This area

0:54in thinninging province known as Govik

0:56was the site of a fierce battle in June

0:591969.

1:01According to American records, more than

1:03300 Vietnamese soldiers were buried

1:05together in a mass grave there. Using

1:08photographs taken immediately after the

1:10battle, witness testimonies, and new

1:13analytical methods. Researchers have now

1:16been able to identify the grave's

1:17location with an estimated margin of

1:20error of only around 10 meters

1:23>> in sketches that the veterans provided

1:26and overlaid those drawings and sketches

1:29on Google Earth and would send those

1:31back get this information back to these

1:34two veterans that were involved in the

1:36burial detail. It's a very emotional

1:39thing for them too. After receiving

1:41information from American veterans about

1:44possible mass graves linked to specific

1:46battles and locations, we began

1:48cross-checking it with report from the

1:50Vietnam's people army as well as

1:53butterfield reports from the US

1:55military, including documents seized by

1:57American forces after the battles.

2:00>> Through the memories of witnesses, many

2:02mass graves that remained hidden for

2:04decades are gradually being identified.

2:07The success of this method lies not only

2:10in technology or archival records, but

2:13also in the effort to reconnect the

2:15memories of those who lived through the

2:17war on both sides.

2:19>> Really fine graves.

2:22At least 50% is the veterans memories.

2:25But if you don't have those memories,

2:27that's it. They're they're going to be

2:29stymied. And we have to tap the brains

2:31of other veterans that that I know are

2:35out there. I know they're out there. If

2:37they understood

2:39all that was going on, they'd be on the

2:41phone right away, say, "Oh, you know, I

2:43can help. I can help." So far, 250 case

2:47files linked to battle sites where

2:49Vietnamese soldiers were killed across

2:51southern battlefields have been

2:53compiled. Some of these dossier have

2:55been described by authorities as

2:58exceptionally detailed, offering strong

3:00hope of locating more remains.

3:04There are graves containing 300 people,

3:07others with 130, and even the smallest

3:10contain around 10. If all of them can be

3:12excavated, 3,000 m finally regain their

3:16names or at the very least be brought

3:19home to rest in margin cemeteries.

3:23As witnesses in wartime records

3:25gradually fade with time, the

3:27combination of veterans memories and

3:30modern technology is expected to provide

3:32new leads, shorten the search process,

3:35and help bring more fallen soldiers back

3:37to their families.
