0:00Well, hello and welcome
0:01to this English lesson
0:04I'll explain a little bit
0:05more about home remedies
0:07in just a little bit.
0:08But the short version of what
0:10a home remedy is is it's something
0:12you do when you don't feel well or
0:15you've injured yourself at home
0:17instead of going to a doctor.
0:19So it's for minor things,
0:21minor ailments and minor injuries.
0:24So in this lesson I will be
0:26explaining the remedies but also
0:28kind of talking about what leads
0:31you to using that home remedy.
0:34So, well, once again, welcome
0:36to this English lesson
0:41So the word remedy simply means
0:43something you do when you're
0:45not feeling well, when you're
0:47sick, or something you do
0:49after you injure yourself.
0:51A great example would be a good
0:54home remedy is remember, so if
0:57you aren't feeling great, if
0:59you're feeling a little bit
1:00under the weather, that means
1:02you're not quite sick, but you
1:04don't feel a hundred percent,
1:07That's probably my favourite thing
1:09to do, my favourite home remedy.
1:12But you can also see in this
1:13picture there are lemons, there's
1:15garlic, there looks like some
1:17kind of loose, leaf tea.
1:20I think there's honey
1:22And there are a few other things,
1:24that some people might use
1:27treat themselves when they're
1:29not feeling well or when
1:30they have injured themselves.
1:32So a home remedy then is a remedy
1:35that you use at home,
1:37something simple that you do when
1:39you aren't feeling well or when
1:41you are slightly injured.
1:44you should go to the doctor.
1:46remedy will do just fine.
1:50So number one, if you have
1:52a sore throat, when you talk
1:55your voice sounds like this
1:57because you've been coughing
1:59and your throat aches.
2:03Maybe you want to have some
2:05peppermint tea with honey
2:06or some regular, English
2:08breakfast tea with honey.
2:10Honey in tea really soothes
2:13your throat and I often
2:16will have tea with honey around
2:18this time of year, thankfully
2:20not feeling sick at all.
2:23There are some sicknesses
2:25Maybe I should start drinking tea
2:27with honey now just to prevent
2:31getting a sore throat.
2:32But you also see there
2:37to have citrus fruit as well
2:39to kind of help, kind of
2:44bolster their immune system.
2:46There's two words there
2:47that maybe you don't know.
2:48When you bolster something,
2:50you make it stronger.
2:52Your immune system is what
2:53fights off disease or illness.
2:59So this might be somewhat cultural.
3:02Soup, is not cultural, but the kind
3:05of soup when you're sick.
3:06Chicken noodle soup might be quite
3:08North American, I'm not sure.
3:11But chicken noodle soup is made
3:13from chicken broth, pieces of
3:16chicken, usually some vegetables
3:18like carrots, and maybe some peas.
3:21of course, noodles in the soup.
3:23You can see here a nice hot bowl
3:26of chicken noodle soup.
3:28This is a remedy that people
3:29often use when they have a cold.
3:32So when I was a kid, if I stayed
3:35home from school because I
3:36wasn't feeling well, a lot of
3:39times my mom would make me a bowl
3:41of chicken noodle soup.
3:42And the idea was that that would
3:46The hot soup, the vitamins
3:49and minerals, or whatever's
3:51in chicken noodle soup,
3:53would somehow make me feel.
3:58In fact, one of my kids was
4:00sick last week, and so we bought
4:03some chicken noodle soup.
4:04We bought, like, a big thing
4:06of frozen chicken noodle
4:08soup from a, a place that
4:11makes it from scratch.
4:12And, it was really yummy.
4:14I actually had some of it as well.
4:19So this is a big deal.
4:21Often when you're a little bit
4:22sick, might be losing fluids
4:25for one reason or another.
4:27And plenty of fluids.
4:37You can sometimes become dehydrated
4:41when you aren't feeling well.
4:42When you're dehydrated, it
4:44means your body doesn't
4:45have enough water in it.
4:47So it can be a really good idea.
4:50Drink a lot of water,
4:52just to stay hydrated.
4:54So the doctor will often say
4:58If you were to research online
5:00what to do when you have a cold,
5:02it would probably say,
5:03make sure you're getting
5:04chicken noodle soup and plenty of
5:07fluids to stay hydrated.
5:12I don't know much about
5:14aromatherapy, but aromatherapy is
5:16the use of scents, smells,
5:19to help you feel better.
5:23If you look at this little picture
5:26here, let me zoom in further.
5:29Beside the brown thing with
5:31steam coming out, there are
5:33some eucalyptus leaves.
5:35So Jen grows eucalyptus.
5:37It is a very fragrant plant.
5:45we hang it in our shower.
5:47So when you have a shower, you can
5:50smell the eucalyptus and the aroma
5:54can make you feel better.
5:55So aromatherapy is used just
5:58to make you feel better, like
5:59mentally and physically.
6:02It just makes, things
6:06But I don't know what all of these
6:08things are, I think they obviously
6:10use steam and different kinds of
6:13leaves, that smell good to
6:15make the whole room smell amazing.
6:22A cold compress is something
6:24that you use when you want to.
6:32taken a washcloth and made it very
6:35cold and put it on my
6:36forehead if I have a fever.
6:39Fever is when your body
6:42This person is using a cold
6:44compress or ice pack on their
6:46ankle because they might have just
6:49injured their ankle slightly.
6:53This is an actual ice pack.
6:55You keep these in the freezer.
7:01So when you injure yourself,
7:03by the way, I had an ice pack here
7:06after I broke my collarbone.
7:08It was very, very soothing.
7:11It can just be a cold washcloth
7:14that you might put on your
7:15forehead if you have a fever.
7:18It might be an ice pack that you
7:20put on a part of your body that
7:22you have slightly injured.
7:24Or you might use a warm compress.
7:27So this is also a nice thing to do.
7:30If, let's say you have a cold,
7:33your nose is stuffed up and
7:35your sinuses are stuffed up,
7:37and your face just doesn't feel
7:39very good at all, you might put
7:42warm compress or a warm
7:44washcloth on your face just to
7:46kind of help you feel a little
7:50So a couple of different kinds
7:53of ways, to use heat or cold
7:56to, help you feel better.
8:01So I have a heating pad.
8:04A heating pad is used,
8:06uses electricity order to warm
8:10up a part of your body right now.
8:13Because I tore my hamstring a
8:15number of months ago, sometimes
8:17I will lie on the couch,
8:19reclined, and I will put a
8:21heating pad under that part of
8:23my leg so that heat goes into
8:26that muscle and it really makes
8:29I really think it is a great way
8:33to, have a little home remedy
8:36stiff muscle feel better.
8:38So a heating pad has.
8:42Ours has four different
8:45I use the highest level.
8:47And then it warms up your body.
8:50Some people use heating pads just
8:52to stay warm, but, generally a
8:54heating pad, I know when I had a
8:57sore back a couple of years ago,
8:59I used a heating pad to kind of
9:02help warm up that part of my
9:09So a heating pad, an electric.
9:12A little electric thing.
9:13Little electric pad where you
9:15can turn it on and the heat
9:17makes you feel a lot better.
9:22A lot of these home remedies
9:24are for sore throats.
9:29should I gargle this way?
9:38I'm not sure if you can hear that,
9:41you don't drink the water.
9:43Don't do that with salt water.
9:45But you put some water
9:46in your mouth and you
9:48blow bubbles through it.
9:49You gargle and then you spit
9:51it out when you're done.
9:53throat, sometimes gargling
9:57Isn't that a great word?
9:59Gargling with salt water
10:00can be a good home remedy.
10:03Can make your throat feel better.
10:05If you have dry skin.
10:06So in the winter, in countries like
10:09Canada, where it's cold, the heat
10:11in our houses makes our skin dry.
10:15Because we are heating our
10:17houses, it removes a lot
10:18of the humidity from the air.
10:20And so often people will put lotion
10:23on their hands and maybe
10:25on their face to keep their
10:27skin soft and so it's not dry.
10:32Didn't used to do this.
10:33But I find that the more,
10:37I put gloves on and off, or you
10:39put your hands in your pocket
10:40and take them out a lot,
10:42your hands can get dry and chafed.
10:45When, when your hands are chafed,
10:47they turn a little bit red.
10:48My hands are pretty good right now.
10:50But, certainly lotion is a nice way
10:57And if you have a plant called
10:59the aloe vera plant, you
11:01can actually use the juice
11:03from inside the plant
11:05to treat your skin as well.
11:09I don't have an aloe vera plant.
11:12But you can buy aloe
11:13vera lotion as well.
11:15For dry skin or lotion
11:16that has aloe vera in it.
11:25of the situation where you
11:26would take a warm bath.
11:28Let's say you worked really hard,
11:31did really hard physical
11:32labour, and then the next
11:34day your muscles are sore.
11:38Or maybe you went to the gym
11:40yesterday and your muscles
11:42are a little bit sore, you
11:43lifted weights and maybe
11:45you ran on the treadmill.
11:47The day after working hard
11:50or exercising hard, you
11:51might take a warm bath.
11:53You probably wouldn't
11:56Often your muscles are sore.
11:58The next day where you're like, oh,
12:00just really stiff and sore from
12:04working hard or from working out.
12:06In that situation, you
12:07might take a warm bath.
12:09It'll just make you feel
12:11a little bit better.
12:12I don't usually do that.
12:14I often will have a warm
12:16or hot shower, and it has
12:18kind of the same effect.
12:19It just makes you feel better.
12:22If your muscles are stiff, you
12:23know what I mean by stiff?
12:24It's like your muscles just.
12:27They hurt a little bit.
12:28Like, you didn't injure yourself,
12:30but you just feel, like, kind of
12:32stiff and sore from working out.
12:35The home remedy that works
12:36for that is to have a warm bath,
12:39a jet tub or a Jacuzzi tub.
12:42Or, there's another name for
12:44this kind of tub, but it is a tub,
12:47that has water jets in it.
12:49So it's kind of like
12:52but sometimes I wish I did.
12:55If you, again, have sore muscles,
12:58whatever reason, a jet tub
13:01or a jacuzzi tub, a whirlpool
13:03tub, it's sometimes called.
13:05It's just a great thing
13:06to jump into and use.
13:08It will really soothe your
13:10aching muscles a lot.
13:15get a massage from someone.
13:17Or you might massage yourself.
13:19Let's say you worked on
13:21the computer all day and your neck
13:23is very, very stiff and sore.
13:27this person's doing.
13:29You might massage your neck so that
13:32it feels a little bit better.
13:35You'll kind of pinch and pull
13:38and rub the muscles,
13:40just to loosen things up.
13:42You might even do this, like,
13:43let's say you have a bad cold.
13:46And your head, you might
13:47massage your forehead or your
13:49temples a little bit.
13:51If you have a headache,
13:53You might massage a little bit.
13:55But certainly a nice way,
13:57to feel a little bit better
13:59if you are experiencing any
14:01kind of pain or soreness.
14:03A little bit of massage,
14:11Sometimes just taking a bit
14:12of a break and breathing deeply is
14:15a good home remedy for things
14:17like, say you're really stressed.
14:20Let's say work has been incredibly
14:22difficult, and maybe you're
14:25just like, oh, I need to stop
14:27and take a little bit of a break.
14:28Deep breathing would be
14:32You can take a deep breath,
14:34and then you can let that breath
14:35out, and you can, just kind
14:38of calm yourself down and try
14:40to feel a little bit better.
14:41So if you are stressed, have a
14:45lot of anxiety, if you're
14:46afraid of something, maybe sit
14:49down, take a few deep breaths,
14:51maybe close your eyes, and you
14:53hopefully Will feel a little
14:59Believe it or not, walking is one
15:01of the best things you can do, no
15:03matter what's wrong with you.
15:05So if your muscles are a little
15:07for a walk might be a good idea.
15:09If you need to think about
15:11something, maybe going
15:13for a walk is a great idea.
15:15Walking is so cool because
15:17it's not totally exercise,
15:20but it's also not just sitting
15:22on a couch doing nothing.
15:23It's like in between.
15:25It gets you moving, it gets you
15:27outside, it gets you in nature.
15:29So walking can be a great
15:31remedy, a great treatment for
15:33after a stressful day at work,
15:36or if you just need to loosen
15:38up a little bit, from being
15:40sore from working hard or
15:42something like that.
15:43I know that anytime I have
15:45injured myself, they want me
15:47to start walking as soon as
15:49possible because it increases
15:51the flow of blood through your
15:53body and it's just really,
15:55really good and really, really
15:57So walking one of the best
15:59home remedies for almost
16:00anything, I think steam.
16:03So I used to do this, as a kid.
16:06My mom would put a bowl
16:08of steaming water and I would
16:10put a towel over my head
16:11if I had a stuffed up nose.
16:16This was one of the home remedies
16:17to sit over a bowl of steaming
16:19water and this would kind of make
16:21your nose run a little bit and
16:24you would just feel a little bit
16:30I think you're supposed
16:35That is the bad North American
16:38pronunciation of this.
16:39We do not have a sauna
16:42Lot of people who are
16:43from northern European countries
16:47A sauna is a very hot room
16:50with hot rocks that produce steam
16:52when you put water on them.
16:54And when you're in the sauna or
16:55sauna, sorry if I'm saying it
16:57wrong, it just can make you sweat
17:01and, it can just clear your head.
17:04And I think you're supposed
17:05to jump into really cold water,
17:09then go back in the sauna
17:10and go back and forth.
17:11I think that's supposed
17:11to be really good for your body.
17:16Now when you exercise, you
17:19might stretch before or
17:22but it can also feel good.
17:24Let's say your shoulder
17:26is a little bit sore.
17:27It can feel good just to stretch
17:29your shoulder out a bit.
17:31It's good to do a little bit
17:32of stretching so that you feel
17:34a little bit better and the muscle
17:36feels a little bit better.
17:38So I often do some light
17:40stretching in the morning.
17:43You're like, you yawn and stretch
17:46out a little bit, like a cat.
17:48Cats do a lot of stretching,
17:50but yes, stretching.
17:51I should have had someone
17:52stretching after getting
17:55of stretching for exercise.
17:57But, both are, are just good ways
18:00to loosen up your muscles a bit.
18:04So simply doing anything, if you
18:08are injured, if you are sick,
18:10rest is very, very important.
18:14This coming from the guy
18:15who said walking is really
18:20If you're sick and take a day
18:22off work, you don't then try
18:24to go shopping or go see a movie.
18:26You just stay home and rest.
18:28You sit on your couch,
18:31You don't do anything strenuous.
18:34When you do something strenuous,
18:36it means it's like difficult,
18:37like lifting things or walking for
18:40five miles or 10 kilometers or,
18:43sorry, those aren't equal.
18:44But, rest is just really,
18:46really good elevation.
18:49If you have injured an extremity.
18:52So an extremity would be
18:54your feet or your hands, like
18:56the things furthest away from your
18:58body at the end of your limbs.
19:02So elevation would be when you
19:04put something up in the air.
19:07So if you twist your ankle,
19:09the doctor might say you
19:10need to go home and rest.
19:12You need to put ice on it, you
19:14need to put a, compression
19:15bandage on it, and you need to
19:17elevate your foot so you need to
19:19put it higher than the rest of
19:23And then I just mentioned
19:25compression bandage.
19:26A compression bandage is kind
19:28of a stretchy bandage that you
19:31might put on a part of your body
19:33just to prevent it from
19:34moving too much if it's injured.
19:37Like if your wrist was really sore,
19:39you might want to rest for a two,
19:41for a day and put a compression
19:43bandage on it, so that
19:46it feels a little bit better.
19:48And then these last two are
19:50not really home remedies.
19:55So that means that you are
19:57able to, just buy these
19:59without a prescription.
20:01The two most common painkillers
20:04ibuprofen, and Tylenol,
20:09which we call acetaminophen.
20:11And I think in some countries
20:12it's called paracetamol.
20:15Anyways, these are very mild
20:17painkillers that you might take if
20:19you have a headache or small
20:22aches and pains in your body.
20:24You might take Advil
20:26or you might take Tylenol.
