Jersey Stops Plan to End Petrol and Diesel Cars

Jersey will not stop selling new petrol and diesel cars in 2030.

The government already stopped plans for used cars, and now the whole policy is gone.

Environment Minister Steve Luce said most people did not like the plan, and the UK's plan will affect Jersey automatically.

Over 2,000 people replied to a survey, with 63% of individuals and 79% of organisations saying they would be hurt by the plan.

Deputy Luce said economic advice and survey answers helped him decide.

The UK's changes will automatically affect Jersey, so new laws are not needed.

There will be no limits on importing and registering fossil fuel vehicles.

Most people who replied to the survey did not like the plan and wanted to choose their vehicles freely.

The minister said reducing road emissions will take longer, but a fair transition for local motorists is needed, with affordability being a key issue.

Despite stopping the plan, Luce is still committed to Jersey's 2050 net zero goal.

Stopping new petrol and diesel vehicles was a key part of that goal.

It is time to rethink parts of the Carbon Neutral Roadmap.

The approach to this transition needs to change.

The government can now review its overall policy on vehicles and transport to achieve sustainable goals and help Islanders.
