President Trump to Issue Order for Airport Security Workers' Pay

A significant number of airport security personnel have been affected by the partial US government shutdown, resulting in numerous absences and substantial travel delays.

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will take executive action to ensure the payment of 50,000 airport security workers, as Congressional negotiations to address staffing shortages stalled.

The President stated on social media that he has instructed the Department of Homeland Security to immediately pay TSA agents to address the emergency situation and put an end to the disruptions at airports caused by the Democratic party.

However, Trump did not provide any further details on when the order would be signed or the source of the funding.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, nearly 500 airport security officers have resigned since the partial government shutdown began in February, due to the congressional dispute over the department's funding, which has forced TSA officers to work without pay.

It remains unclear how long the funding will last or whether Trump is utilizing funds already approved for the Department of Homeland Security as part of a massive tax and spending bill last year.

In an effort to mitigate the effects of the partial government shutdown, Trump has deployed ICE agents to airports.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune described Trump's move as a temporary solution but did not specify the duration of the TSA paychecks.

The top Democrat on the House of Representatives' homeland security committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, expressed uncertainty about the legality of Trump's plan to pay TSA officers.

Chris Sununu, CEO of the airline trade group Airlines for America, welcomed the solution to pay tens of thousands of dedicated TSA officers but emphasized the need for lawmakers to enact a permanent solution to prevent such disruptions in the future.

The Democratic party in Congress has been withholding funding for the Department of Homeland Security while pushing for changes to the rules governing its immigration operations, following the fatal shooting of US citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by agents in Minneapolis in January.

The Republican party has rejected repeated Democratic proposals to fund the TSA separately while negotiating reforms for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Thune expressed his desire to pass legislation funding all Department of Homeland Security operations, including the coast guard and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

According to Thune, the Democrats have shown no interest in funding any of the law enforcement functions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Sen. Chris Murphy, the senior Democrat on a homeland security appropriations panel, reported that progress had been made in negotiations until Trump's announcement, with active discussions and traded offers throughout the day.

The Transportation Security Administration warned on Wednesday that it may be forced to close smaller airports in the US if staffing issues worsen.

On Wednesday, more than 11% of TSA officers, or 3,120 agents, were absent, with much higher absentee rates of 30% or more reported at several major airports, including New York's JFK and Houston's airports.

The TSA is struggling to cope with the surge in travel during the school spring break, as absences have increased, leading to hours-long delays at security checkpoints in some airports.

Hundreds of US immigration agents and Homeland Security Investigations officers began deploying at 14 US airports on Monday to assist with security screening.

Some of these agents are now performing tasks such as checking IDs with TSA equipment, guarding entrances and exits, and assisting with logistics and crowd control.

Meanwhile, ICE and other law enforcement personnel at the Department of Homeland Security are continuing to receive their pay during the shutdown.
