Lawyer Claire Seaborn Wants to be Liberal Candidate in Beaches-East York

The Toronto seat will be empty when Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith leaves soon.

A familiar face on Parliament Hill is trying to become an MP.

Claire Seaborn, a lawyer and former chief of staff, wants the Liberal nomination in Beaches-East York.

She told CBC News about her campaign.

Seaborn said she got support from people she respects in Beaches-East York. She thinks the community's voices must be heard in Ottawa.

Seaborn works on environmental law and big projects. She advises the Canada Climate Law Initiative and is a senior fellow at the University of Toronto.

She was a senior aide in the last Liberal government, working with ministers Catherine McKenna and Jonathan Wilkinson.

Seaborn left Parliament Hill in April 2024 and now works as a lawyer.

Toronto Liberal MP Erskine-Smith is leaving federal politics.

Guilbeault says Canada is not doing well on climate action as he resigns as MP.

Seaborn wrote that she is a proud Liberal who listens and works hard.

Seaborn was born and raised in East Toronto and lives in the riding with her family.

No official nomination race has started yet. The riding has been held by Liberal MP Erskine-Smith since 2015.

Erskine-Smith has not officially left the seat, but he gave his final speech in the House of Commons. A farewell party is scheduled for June 25.

Quebec MP Alexandre Boulerice officially left the NDP to run provincially.

Yorkton-Melville MP Cathay Wagantall will step down on August 31.

Erskine-Smith was thinking of running for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party, but lost a nomination race in May.

There are six upcoming federal byelections, but most seats have not been vacated yet. Wilkinson and Savard-Tremblay have officially resigned.

Erskine-Smith, Wagantall, Boulerice, and Guilbeault will all be stepping down soon.
