California Creates AI Job Loss Tracker

Governor Gavin Newsom is taking action as AI changes the workforce.

The state is starting to track AI-related job loss and predict where AI may impact jobs in the future. This data will be available to the public through the California AI-Unemployment Tracker and will be updated monthly.

The tool was made with the California Policy Lab at the University of California.

AI is advancing fast, and workers are worried about their jobs. This tracker provides evidence to help understand what's changing and how to support affected workers, said Till von Wachter, co-author and faculty director of the California Policy Lab UCLA.

The tracker's first findings do not show widespread AI-related job loss yet, but some industries and groups are at risk, including tech sectors and employees in the Bay Area. Individuals with college degrees who often use AI may be most affected by AI in the workforce.

A recent survey found that around 20 percent of Americans use AI at work, mostly workers under 50 with a bachelor's degree. Another survey found that 99 percent of executive leaders expect AI to impact the number of employees in the next two years.
