Big European Airline Stops UK Flights Due to Fuel Crisis

A European airline started a new route in 2018.

A major European airline has stopped a UK route that started in 2018 and won't be bookable after this month.

The airline, one of Europe's largest, will also cut 20,000 short flights this summer due to high fuel prices caused by Middle East conflict.

Lufthansa, Germany's main airline, will stop its Glasgow to Frankfurt service, with the last bookable flight on May 31.

Lufthansa won't run the direct Glasgow service anymore.

A Lufthansa spokesman said the airline will reduce its summer schedule due to high fuel prices, cutting nearly 1% of available seats.

Lufthansa will cancel 20,000 flights by October and change its flight schedules. Glasgow flights will now go via Zurich, not Frankfurt.

Lufthansa isn't the only airline to cancel flights. SAS is canceling over 1,000 flights, and United Airlines is canceling 5% of its flights.

Other airlines are raising prices due to high fuel costs. Virgin Atlantic says it can't afford the current fuel prices and must increase ticket prices.

Virgin Atlantic's CEO said the airline has never seen such high fuel prices, which are more than double the usual cost.

Virgin Atlantic has added a £50 surcharge to economy tickets, £180 to premium economy, and £360 to business class, but says this still doesn't cover the rising costs.

Fuel is the second-highest expense for airlines, making up 27% of operating costs. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the conflict began, rising to $150-$200 per barrel.
