Abandoned UK Airport to Reopen After 12 Years

An old airport in the UK is taking steps to reopen.

The Manston Airport in Kent might start working again by 2029. It will be a place for cargo planes after being closed since 2014.

The airport was used as a parking lot for trucks during the pandemic. For 12 years, it has been mostly empty. Since 2019, a company has been trying to get it running again.

RiverOak Strategic Partners bought the airport for £16.5 million in 2019. They wanted to reopen it by 2025, but it was delayed due to high costs.

The company is talking to airlines and cargo companies. The planning process is now in its third phase.

Manston airport will reopen in 2029.

From March 16 to June 22, people can give their opinions on changes to the airport's airspace.

The suggested changes are being shown to local people and others who are interested.

Tony Freudmann from RiverOak Strategic Partners said this is an important step to reopen the airport.

He said it's a chance to help the UK air cargo market and improve the economy in east Kent.

The company knows the airport is important to the area's history. They want people to learn about their plan and give feedback.

The first plan for the airport said it would cost £400 million. Now, the cost is £750 million.

When the work is done, the airport will be able to handle over a million tonnes of cargo each year.
